I have researched this some and found that if the flash drive didn't come with its own software then most likely the drives size cannot be altered. If it could be partitioned then XP would recognize it as being able to be partitioned and give you the functionality. People that have lost there software for there drive or want more functionality and encryption capabilities seem to be using a program called truecrypt. All the people that I have seen in the forums talking about running DSL from a flash drive use the drive for the OS only and for adding extra programs and plugins.
http://www.truecrypt.org/ EDIT: I tried looking on Corsair site for my drive also and found that only certain drives can be partitioned. Then I tried trucrypt and it said my drives size cannot be changed. Just get a smaller drive to run DSL from. You can get a 256mb drive for 10.00. |

Any drive can be partitioned.
I would probably put the data partition first (since windoze will need it), because windoze only sees the first partition on a USB device such as a flash drives (hard drives are different and look different to the O/S so windows sees them all), then use DSL to make an ext2/3 partition and boot it. |

Looks at partitioning a CF card, but the same principle applies, using a "make bootable" tool, then when it is made bootable into DOS, using DOS tools to partition.

You can use it to partition flash drives depending on how your BIOS mounts them... if you have the ability to force it to make any flash drive detected look like a hard drive rather than a floppy PQMagic will actually let you partition it as though it were a regular hard drive
