Get a router that has several ethernet ports and make sure you are hardwired to the router. Don't go wireless for gaming. There is no real difference between routers when you are hardwired so get one that has a good 802.11g for your folks laptop and you use ethernet cable.

what i've done is this:
setup a damn good wired router ( xincom 502 twin wan router ) and then ran a cable from there to a Wireless router ( AirLink MiMo XR 2550ft ), setup the airlink with the gateway of 192.168.0.1 and the xincom is orginally setup with 192.168.1.1 volla, while retaining all the performance and stability of a steller wired router, and taking full advantage of it's features, i've also provided a wireless router and taken full advantage of it's wireless features, and any security the wired router had, the wireless one also takes advantage off. For example being, the twin wan, running load balanceing connections, the balancing remains ![]() IMO, i think this is overall the best and more secure solution for a solid wired and secure wired connection, and having wireless. Now sharing files through the wireless is a bit iffy enless you want to make the network a full blown network that includes wireless in it, then you basically disable the routering on the wireless router making it into a wireless hub.

For people that are on a budget like I am and only have a few PC's and want to download and play online games at the same time then the DGL-4300 is by far the best for the money.
With 8mbs/Comcast Cable I can have a few torrents running with a combined dl speed of 400kbs/600kbs and ul speed of 74kbs and still get pings below 100ms on servers anywhere in the western states. Not a laggy ping either, I can actually play a decent competitive game. I am running wired on the gamer and wireless on the two extra machines. I just bought a D-Link DIR-625.
So far its great!! It features a QoS Engine which is perfect for me. I can set me & my wife's IP to have priority with gaming ports, and the other PCs on my network have lower priority. I have a younger brother who likes to download, so I simply set him to lower priority and it doesn't affect my gaming in the least. |

Best router for PC Gaming? A dedicated PC running FreeBSD or OpenBSD.
