Numnuts HD conflicts

I have Athlon 64 3500+
MSI KL8n Neo 2 Platinum
Nvidia nforce 3 Chipset
1 GB Corsair Pro Series Extreme memory Speed 3200 LED
ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256MB DDR
Maxtor 6B1209
IBM Deskstar DTLA 307075

My problem is that - The Maxtor is my primary HD. When I try and hook
up the IBM as a slave - The Maxtor is not detected - I have check this in
the bios, while the bios will auto detect the IBM slave being there it will not "see" the
Maxtor. As soon as I unhook the IBM and reboot the sys sees the MAx no Prob..
- I have several other older HD (1) Maxtor 5T030H3 (2) Quantum Fireball LCT10
and I don't have any problem getting them to work. Does anybody have an
Idea here. I have looked at my jumper settings and they are what the MFG
said to set them at.

Hep me Sum buddy

PangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nice

make sure that both hard drives are correctly jumpered to run as "master" and "slave" devices, and
the both master and slave devices are attached to the IDE cable's master and slave connectors... the master connector is at the end of the IDE cable, and the slave connector is in the middle. also, try replacing the IDE cable.

otherwise, check the IDE cable, to see if it can be used in the Cable Select configuration, and then you may want to try using Cable Select... read more info below...

You'd be surprised at how common that is these days.

There is something else to consider. Some drives will have 3 standard settings, being Master, Slave, Cable Select, however some might have a 4th setting which would be a "Master with Slave drive".

I think Pangings idea is right on about changing the IDE cable. Infact, if you can, use an older 40 wire cable to see if that works. Depending on the age of the drive it may not work properly with 80 wire cable, especially newer 80 wire cable that has a notch out of one of the wires.

Yup.. that's why SATA is so nice.. IDE can be a pain with multiple drives on one channel- plus smaller cables.
Actually I still have 1 IDE, but soon I will be all SATA.
