A small blurb in an article about the AMD Tech Tour on The Cold Shop mentions that Gigabyte has managed to pull off a pretty impressive overclock of a new Thoroughbred 2200+ to 2.6-2.7 GHz. This would put AMD back on top over Intel as the best overclocking chip available as this would be a little under a GHz of extra speed.

2.7 ghz with Liquid nitrogen.
I refuse to believe that is done with air cooling or even a heavy duty watercooling rig.

If a P4 can do it, why do you think this thing can't? Don't forget it's made with a .13 micron core just like the new P4s

They just added a note* under the above article here it is
The first reviews of the Thoroughbred 2200+ are out and none of them are Overclocking to anywhere near 2.7 GHz however they are achieving what would be equivalent to 2500-2600+ so it appears Gigabyte was only able to get it up around 2.1 GHz, still an impressive feat but nothing like an Overclock of almost 50%, more like 20% Apparently this is a case of PR guys mistaking some information from engineers.

Got to be careful when reading the PR bull. Real user comments are more realistic.

With some internal tweaking AMD will get the core higher, and faster. No doubt about that. Maybe future TBreds will clock higher.

Northwoods at 2.533Ghz run at 1.5 volts .13 micron has really little to do with heat, transistor amount and it's voltages are what matters. .13microns means less voltage is required, thus less heat, but running .15 volts over another processor will mean more heat, even with less transistors. Tbreds could realistically with aircooling probably get around 2.1-2.2ghz, while with aircooling a northwood can reach around 2.7-2.8. Altough, with the new 133Mhz bus ones they seem to be clocking a bit higher than that. I don't believe Tbreds have as much overhead as everyone thinks. It's just a transition processor, only meant to last until hammer comes out, then be the budget proc. |
