time to upgrade for me

I'm done with my college fees this spring sem so now I'm going to upgrade my pc to core 2 duo. here's what I plan on buying:
mb: evga 680i
cpu: e6600 w/ tuniq tower 120
memory: ocz OCZ2G8002GK (x2=4gb)
I wonder how fast will this memory go on overclocking but anyway, it doesn't matter much, I'll just set the fsb/memory unlinked.
Any other suggestions?
I'll probably also buy Vista Ultimate along with my upgrade. I'm feeling uneasy to spend an additional $400 for an OS but I also have this other feeling of wanting the "ultimate"

You can buy TWO copies of the OEM version - $199 each - for the price of ONE copy of Retail Ultimate.

If you are going to have 2 or less motherboards during your Vista lifetime, it would make sense to go OEM.

If you change your MB every year or do 3 or more in the liftime of Vista, Retail would be the way to go, I think.

If you buy 2 copies of OEM and a year later you remove your existing motherboard and put in a new motherboard, you still have one legal copy that you can activate with the new board, plus one legal copy you can pair with your old motherboard. If you give that board and license away, everybody wins. If you SELL that board with the legal OEM copy, you get some of your money back.

w00t!

BTW, I think if I had an 8800GTX, I would want the fastest processor you could reasonably afford so it isn't CPU limited.

The 4 meg 6600 is no slouch, but it may hold the GTX back.

Enjoy the new rig!

I plan on overclocking the e6600 to 3+ghz so that it won't hold back my 8800gtx.
I'll get the retail version of vista 'cause I change mb every year or so whenever there's a new processor that is worth upgrading to.
thanks!

I never have understood this overclocking thing. In 3D Mark your scores may go up, but in some games you get only a few frames per second increase. Why take the risk?

Anyway, more power to ya on that 8800GTX - that is one wicked fast card.

I ordered a Scythe Ninja Plus rev.B instead of the Tuniq Tower. I grew tired of waiting for the Tuniq Tower to be back on stock in Newegg.
Another thing is that I hold off my order of the evga 680i board after I read about ram dying on this board over at the evga forums. I got scared about the issues with this board that I'm now leaning towards the Asus P5N32-E SLI since the Striker Extreme is too damn expensive for a motherboard for me.

Can't fault that logic.

But I wouldn't want to fork out the $400 for the thing.

Don't forget folks there is also the retail upgrade. BTW, Sidewinder don't forget there is some major issue w/ the Nvidia drivers on Vista.

It's $555 for ultimate retail for me after everything is said and done and tallied up.

I just want one plain OS for my comp and that would be vista right now. no virtual OS. heck, I don't even like the idea of dual booting on my pc. I don't know but that's just me, I want everything simple, neat and clean especially my comp

btw, I settled with a diff. chipset (p965) Asus Commando board instead of nvidia's 680i.

Multibooting isn't messy really nor is virtualization. Vista is messy.

If you really want a clean neat and simple operating system go to Ubuntu Linux

I stand by what I said no matter what: Why cripple your machine with Vista or any other Windows?

I'm doing the Parallels 30 day trial on OS X - and it is awesome. This Virtual Machine stuff is fantastic.

You run each OS (Windows and Linux for instance) in its own ISOLATED "container" that does not have the ability to trash your system. It's totally clean - it's like some giant ZIP file or something - all the work is done inside of that and doesn't interfere with the host OS.

You want it gone? Boom - uninstall and nothing is affected.

Ya really might wanna try it before trashing it. It has Dual Boot totally smacked from a convenience standpoint, imo.

ok, I might've thought wrong about virtual and dual booting since I haven't even tried doing it but then, I don't really need any other OS. I'm going with Vista because of DX10 primarily 'cause I only use my computer for gaming most of the time. I actually hate having to move to Vista from XP just because of the damn DX10 but I have no choice or should I say, Microsoft left us no choice at all.

if you want 4GB system, you might want to check out the G.Skill 4GB Kit in CL5 -- F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ (2GB x 2) - F2-6400CL5D-PQ

according to the G.Skill's model number break down sheet, the "PQ" is in segment/series = Performance/Queen which is not the best modules from G.Skill. i believe this PQ kit is in a midrange performance and price point. and it should be better than the other 4GB kit with CL6 from this computer, the CL6 is having "MQ" (Mainstream/Queen) on its model number.

You could delay upgrading to DX10 at least until they have come out with a handful of DX10-only titles I suppose. I think there certainly is a choice. But if you feel like going for it now instead of waiting, it's not gonna hurt anybody.

I'm also interested to see if Cedega will be able to emulate DX10 when it comes out, that would be very interesting to see.

I actually delayed my upgrade when I've read about the price cuts and now I'm thinking of going quad core. It would either be the core 2 quad q6600 2.4ghz (around $550) or xeon x3210 2.13ghz (around $460). I'm not sure if the Asus Commando board supports this xeon processor or not so i'm leaning towards the c2q. there would be no difference in perfomance between these 2 processors when oc'ed to the same frequencies right? I mean, if I were to get the xeon, I'll be using it as a desktop and not a server mostly for gaming. the xeon might even oc more for lower voltage than the c2q right? but, ofcourse, I still need confirmation from you guys if that board does support the quad core xeon.
