How can you tell whats wrong with your DVDROM?
Hey chaps,
Took what I thought was a working DVD ROM out of a working pc, put it in mine, it didn't recognise it at first and I realised I needed to change the jumpers on it, did that - set it to slave, and then it recognises it. Windows thinks its working fine but it won't recognise any disc I have in the drive, CD or DVD. Has the laser gone on it, is it something to do with it being slave (why should it matter?) or what?

But, if it was working well in the other computer, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't in the current one. And, being set as Slave doesn't make it not work. But, try connecting it and setting it properly on another IDE cable just to see if it's that particular connection causing the problem. Another thing to try is to go into Device Manager, expand the CD/DVD drives and remove them all. Reboot and let Windows redetect them. See if things work after that. Good luck! EDIT: One other thing to double check: Although I've never had a drive recognize when the cable is connected in reverse, do make sure the colored stripe is located nearest the Molex (power) plug. There's either a red or black stripe on the IDE cable and it goes nearest the power plug on the drive. |
