the PSU emachines use.....
im wondering, since my cousin's emachine W2646 stopped working, and the power supply seems to be making an odd buzzing noise.
if the PSU can be replaced with a standard ATX PSU that you can buy off newegg or something...... or will that blow up the motherboard like the way Dell motherboards blow up after being volted wrong.....

A friend's emachines PSU failed - after looking up the motherboard as a slightly OEMed variant of an Intel D915GAGL, a "generic" ATX 12v / ATX 2.03 or whatever was obtained (dire warnings about requiring the 24 pin) - no problems.

generally, every machine reguardless of model/brand/make/year that is setup to a specific form factor (even though they may "rearange" the mounting holes and make a "smaller" psu so that you have to use thier own products), every psu should work fine. AT form factor psu's will work flawlessly on an AT board, every ATX psu should work without a hitch in a ATX machine.
Just be aware that you don't want to FORCE any plug into a place in which it doesn't appear to want to go.

(as a side note anythings probably better then the mfg put in there. emachines
are notorious for using cheap/substandard parts. It's why thier cheaper)

hellz yes.
i recently had a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with onboard graphics/sound and nic, plus a hardrive and optical drive in addition to 2x 256mb ddr ram and a PCI modem. The psu that in the machine was a 135 watt "generic unknown" psu. That was the total wattage max marked on it.

well.......i found out that it WAS the PSU.... except when it blew it took the motherboard with it so the thing beeps....starts up.....but theres no video and sometimes it doesnt start up at all and since theres no socket 478 motherboards that support the 400mhz FSB.... she needs a new computer
anyone think its a different reason?

The unfortunate case of cheap psu's, i've had to replace 3 full machines in the last year due to the cheap PSU's popping and taking every single thing with it.

if only there were cheap companies that made GOOD PSUs like good copper heatsinks, good fans, good solid state capacitors, good quality wires, connectors, and interference shielding, and some kind of fail-safe system for the PSUs like fuses that blow if too much voltage goes through them....dont u think that would be worth paying like 300+ extra to protect a $1000+ investment? i think so

yes.... but to many people ignore PSUs as being considered "worthy" investments.... that's why no one wants to spend anything more then 100 bucks on them. And one reason that prebuilders love em, i mean if you blow up a machine a few years down the road, GREAT, you need a replacement!
I mean, how many don't have a UPS? i betcha over 90% of the people don't have one, and 50% of them don't know what it is/does.

UPS is an uninteruptible Power Supply. If a surge, or undersurge (brown out) or complete power loss occurs, the UPS automatically switches over to the built in battery supply, untill either the power come back to normal, OR the battery runs dry.
The point of a UPS is not only to safe your work you may have been doing at the time, BUT to also save your machine as a whole, Preventing dirty power from even getting to the PSU. These little suckers can prevent a computer from litterly FRYING. Surges are bad, but undersurge/brown outs are probably a significant amount worse. And even though you may not be aware of it, there is quite likely a pile of surges/undersurges happening. A UPS with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) will actually do an even better job of protecting your computer and making it run even more stable, but on the fly, reducing variances and noise in the power. IMO, this is the ultimate solution, and really, for 80 bucks, it's worth every penny.

I can say that UPS's are life saving things. I had extended power outages on Friday but no one would have guessed because I was still gaming for another 30 mins afterwards!

......i should get me one of those!
also, my cousin's emachine is officially dead, i tried clearing the CMOS and it worked ONCE .....somewhat, the ports didnt work though and eventually the thing went blank, it doesnt turn on very easily but when it does, it does the same thing, everythings on but nothing works, mouse and keyboard ports dont work when the system is on(but power runs through them when its off) USB ports are the same and yea........i dont think this thing can run anymore......even if it somehow can, i dont think it would be very reliable.

I expect and demand at least 20 years from all my computers. So far so good... none of them have outright died of old age yet
! (Nor are any actually 20 yet)
