New HD isnt detected by bios. Strange.

I just bought WD SE16 250Gb drive. When I overclock the AGP frequency from the default 66mhz to 88mhz the drive isnt detected by the bios.
My current WD 80gigs has no problem with 88mhz.

I have the latest bios ver for my IS7 Abit board.

SATA is more sensitive to increased PCI frequency than PATA, that's why your new drive doesn't work and the old one does.
You should keep the AGP/PCI frequencies at 66/33 to be safe and trouble-free. Try to enable AGP/PCI lock in BIOS if possible or reduce FSB frequency and see if it helps.

I'll echo what RoyBatty said about, PCI/AGP frequency should be locked to the native 33/66. Anything else and you're asking for mayhem.

Once you get the HD recognized, you should be able to configure it however you want.

The 88mhz gives me nice boost when I'm playing. I really dont want to loose 5fps.

5 fps or more hard drive space... I would go to more space!
what games are you playing and what is the average fps?

I've recently had trouble keeping my sata drives stable when o/clocking my setup, all kinds of problems, windows not booting, crashing the list goes on ...
What worked for me was i lowered the udma settings in the bios, mine were set to auto, which defaulted at udma6, i've lowered the setting to udma4 manually and it seems to have given more stability to my pc.
Might be worth a try ?

My machine is 4 years old, so I'm trying to squeeze out of it as much as I can.
The more demanding games I'm playing are far cry, flat out 2, prey, fear, hl2 and in most cases I'm getting around 45-50 fps.

Well, I'm gonna repeat what I said above: It's best to keep PCI/AGP locked to 33/66.

But, if only to see if the HD WILL be detected, why not give this a shot? Lower these settings and see if the HD gets detected. Then you'll know for sure.

AND, honestly, I don't think I'd miss 5 FPS if that's all I'd lose.

It might be more than 5fps. In fear, for example, with 66mhz the game isnt playabale.
I tested it for some time until I came up with 88mhz with the maximum fps and stability I wanted. But, I get the point, Thanks guys.

So, does the new drive work? Did you try to lower the PCI frequency?

PCI can't always be locked, sometimes you need to fiddle with dividers

Running AGP at anything over 80 is pointless, you create too much noise on the bus and then resend commands rob you of your potential performance gains.

Some SATA controllers in older boards have the problem of getting borked along with PATA controllers but nowadays most of them aren't connected to the PCI bus and don't use the same clock, they're right on the southbridge or northbridge so they don't have that problem

It didnt work. The bios didnt detect the HD in lower AGP frequencies as well. Bump. And H3X4D3C1M4L, what do you mean "getting borked"

check with the hard drive maker to see if you need to use a jumper pin or change the jumper pin settings on the drive or if there is a firmware upgraded needed? also check with your motherboard's or the controller's tech supports to see if there is a BIOS or firmware upgraded available and it's needed in order to support the specific device?

I know on a number of VIA chipsets, a SATA II drive needs to be jumpered to run at SATA I speeds. It's possible that you are running into the same thing, even tho you aren't using a VIA chipset.

Check out this page, and see it it helps:

I mean data lost, hard drive possibly damaged.

Usually data lost at minimum if they screw up, hard drive dead is worst case scenario and usually only happens if you run your PCI bus up near 50MHz

@ OldBuzzard: I'll confirm the VIA SATA thing.. on my 8237 southbridge I need to jumper my DiMax 10's for SATA 150 or they don't get detected

What you wrote made me thinking H3X. A while ago, I hooked up a second drive as slave, but after some time the drive just failed and I had to reformat the drive.
After 3 times and a lot of data lost, I got rid of the damn drive and bought a new 250gig. You're saying it wasnt necessarily the drive.

Not necessarily no. I have seen SATA controllers die from overclocking, especially earlier SATA150 ones
