How tolerant are you to noise?

I'm testing some CPU coolers now but I can't give away what they are just yet.

However, what temps are you seeing? AND, are you sure you used the correct type and amount of thermal paste? Is your heatsink securely fastened to the CPU?

I used some silver artic, just a little bit right in the middle of the chip. Should i have used more? Im seeing temps climb close to a 100c before it shuts down

Enzotech Ultra - X is the best air cooler I have used to date. I did a review of it over at xtremesystems as I was one of the first to get it.

It should be fine, it's hard to apply too little provided you follow the instructions properly... you may want to check and be sure the chip is actually covered though.

The chip shouldn't be running that hot at load, even with stock cooling. What are ambient temperatures, and how's the airflow through your case?

Something tells me that the heatsink isn't actually removing the heat from the CPU. Are you sure the clamps are holding it tightly in place and that the fan is working?

I get worried when I see my CPU temps hit the mid-70c.

Most instructions say to put a 'pea-sized' drop right in the middle of the CPU and then firmly press the heatsink into place. My own E6700 is running in the low 40s at idle and may climb to the mid 50s during games.

Its much better to apply it over the IHS yourself in a very very thin layer so you know everything is covered, apply a lil more in middle to allow spread with compression is how i used to do AS5. I now use Cool Laboratory Liquid Metal Pro as it beats AS5 by 5C or better,.

Here's a good tutorial on how to do it. Although I don't use the razor blade method, it's probably the better method.

How to Apply Thermal Paste

The main point is that it's just as bad to have too much as it is to have too little.

Guys thx a bunch, i got the system running at acceptable temps. I took off the fan and cleaned off the previous artic silver and reapplied it evenly. Everything looks to be running fine now with temps@ about 30c or so.
