Pissed Recent heat issues...

My system has been having some serious heat issues recently that had not been occuring before. Until about a month ago, my system ran at a steady 38C, 43C max when running some heavy gaming. However recently I have been reaching 50C and locking up when gaming for a halfhour or longer. Almost everytime it crashes it leaves sound screaming out of my speakers as though the sound card is hanging. It has never crashed in 3DMark2003 except on the sound tests... it doesn't crash when playing the ATI Screensavers for 24 hours, only when sound is combined with the rendering/gaming. The only thing overclocked in my system is my video card and I have managed to get it to crash even wit the card at default speeds, so I highly doubt its related to the card.

AthlonXP 1900+ (Palomino)
512MB PC-2100 (2x256)
Sound Blaster Live! Value (latest Drivers)
Sapphire Radeon 9500 np 128MB (CAT3.2)

Has your local ambient temperature (your weather) gotten significantly hotter recently? Your temperatures are pretty dependant on your ambient temps, so if you suddenly hit summer-like weather, your CPU temps will go up along with the ambient ones...

well i was at a LAN last night and there was person that was running a 2100 on a soyo dragon board. Just bulit it and he was getting temp spikes all night. Hes board auto shutdowns at 80C and truly i dont think he was getting that high. I think the board was reading it wrong. But anyway Alistair i would try to remove you soumdcard and then run whatever it was and see it locks up.

What HSF are you using?

Is the fan on the HSF running at its full potential?
- or is it running slower than it should?

Have you checked your intake fan?
- is it running at full speed?
- there is usually a grill between the intake fan and the outside of the case. Have you checked this area for buildup of dust, and fuzz?

Have you checked your exhaust fan?
- is it running at full speed?

What type of thermal interface material are you using?
- if it is a thermal pad (grey, or pink goop - looks like gum) has it dried out?
- if it is standard thermal grease, have you removed the HSF, and not replaced it with more?

The fan that blows (or pulls) air into the heatsink, can also pull dust, dirt, fuzz, cat, or dog hair into the heatsink.
- have you checked between the fan, and the heatsink... and cleaned it if neccessary?

All of these things are VERY important for your thermal dynamic.

Good luck

After rereading your post... this sounds like the infamous screach of death...

It could be a soundcard / heat issue... check everything that I posted before, and then check to see if your sound card is sharing an IRQ with anything else.

Also, for that motherboard / sound card combo... you should have sound blaster in your 3rd PCI slot...

Once again ... Good Luck !

ok I replaced the thermal compound 2 weeks ago, but it was fine then all voltages appear to be correct in SiSoft Sandra

As for the sound card its presently in slot 4, I'll try moving it up one and see if that helps. If not I'll be removing it and testing it that way...

I'll be trying everything in this thread when I get home from school later today, thanks for the replies so far guys

Heatsink: Coolermaster HC-001 and its running at 7.3k rpm

IRQ's (for the ones appearing wrong when looking in my A+ certification book)

16: Video Card
17: Network Card
19: Sound Card
19: USB Controller
23: USB Controller

Is the K7S5A supposed to be supporting IRQ's that are so high?

yes the PSU fan is working properly

OK I just formatted my system and now appear to only have 16 IRQ's which is how many some of my other friends running the same board have. I have no idea how it started detecting 24, but between that and my switching the sound card to PCI #3 things seem to be behaving so far.

Anything in the 4th PCI of most motherboards can cause an interrupt with the IRQ control line w/ the Primary, and Secondary EIDE controller.

Since the Sound Blaster Live soundcard is a PCI bus hog... that could be causing some of the problems that he was having.

if your mother board supports assighning IRQ's to you pci slots try 9 , 10 , 3, 11, ....... pci lot 1,2,3,4 in that order solves alot of issues sometimes

Creative has recommended that I change my Video Card's IRQ. How can I go about this?

thanx it wasn't PCI 1, but I followed some instructions I found on Creative's site and assigned an IRQ to each PCI slot and that changed it. My Video card was using IRQ 5 which Creative said is the cause of the problem as their cards use the IRQ for something or another.

well... turns out it was the soundcard, I have removed it and am currently using the onboard sound. I don't think I'll be getting another Creative card for a while...

The sound blaster live, and the audigy1 have pretty bad problems, from what I understand the Audigy2 is fixed. BTW,,,, did you know that you can softmod your SB Live! into a full on Audigy?

I have a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 myself with the newest Audigy2 drivers , working just fine - never had any problems with it. Runs the sound tests in §DMark03 just fine as well (only "60 sounds" is not supported).
I'd say it's probably a defect on your sound card.

Do you mean something besides making the drivers think you have an Audigy(2)?
