Sad Goodbye Hiper

Getting ready for bed, and work tomorrow I sat down in front of my PC that was shut off to make sure I had everything ready. All of a sudden my PC turned on, and started to boot. I figured I must of bumped some thing since because of the remote function activity on the USB ports will boot the computer. Anyway it's booting, gets past the bios then goes in to windows. All of a sudden it starts acting like it's shutting down. I throw the power switch on the back, and notice the lovely hot electrolytic smell. Guess the new video card has been putting a nice strain on it. So I'm shopping for a new supply, probably will end up w/ the modular 750W Silverstone.

Thats one of the most messed up PC stories I have ever heard.
I have luckily never had something fry like that. I did however have my server machine turn on by itself one day for no reason at all. I was just minding my business and all of the sudden my the PC booted and stayed on. I have no type of wake features enabled so I never did figure out what caused it. It has an Enermax 465w PSU that passes all in use stress tests and I tested it with a PSU tester and it passed everything.

I hear Silverstone makes a great PSU. Quad rails with enough amps to power a nuclear power plant. I have heard that most people get the Zeus model and stay away from there modular design because of the way they connect.

This is the second PSU I've had die on me. I had a PC Power & Cooling supply totally smoke on me. Rolling black smoke, no flames though but that made this one seem unremarkable.

Yes

I work in Telecom Power so this stuff doesn't phase me all that much. Just was amazed since I've seen no issues till now. Hell you can't even smell any thing at all from the PSU now. I'm going to RMA the PSU, if it was out of warranty I would just repair it myself.

I have one with both Over and Under AVR (Trim and Boost) and that seems to make a bunch of the difference.

APC's RS series - 1200/1500 are good models.

Where would you even get parts?
I would not feel comfortable putting something back in my system that just sent smoke signals.

Don't flame me to bad.....I was going to hard mod my mobo to eliminate the v-droop and I got as far as buying the soldering iron and locating what needed to be done. My soldering iron is still brand new in the package and right next to the high quality solder and magnifying glass.

I could fully load test it at work after my repair. The layout of most supplies do not differ that much too.

The parts would of came from work or I would of ordered from here: http://www.digikey.com/

I had an Enermax EGP365 just refuse to turn on one day. I suppose though having been run at 100% load for 2 years probably did it in.

I've had great luck with Enermax. But I also use UPS's with over and under AVR, something that seems to be key. If I got another PSU, I'd probably go Enermax again.

You might consider reading some posts in jonnyGURU before committing to that Silverstone. They have been having quality control issues lately. This link will take you to the power supply part of the forum website.

Look toward a Corsair 620. Even though it's labeled a 620 watt, there have been reviews that say it can easily do 2 8800GTXs in SLI.

K I looked thru the forum, and really haven't seen much to persuade me from going to another supply. So far it's been working great, and I know all about the connection issue at the PSU. I was very careful to check cables, and ensured each cable seated properly in the supply. I also read the review on the unit from this site (w/ others) prior to purchasing the supply. The PSU has been rock solid for me thus far, and I intend on keeping it. However, I did closely look at the Corsair unit but I really had a nice deal on this Silverstone.

2x 8800GTX's in SLI won't stress a good 620W PSU or hell even a good 500W. Unless you're running 8+ hard drives and a heavy duty overclocked quad core your system shouldn't use more than 400W on full load of DC power.
