Pentium 4E 2.8Ghz
How hot is this processor supposed to be on idle and at peak load?
Mine went from 62 centigrade on idle to 77 centigrade peak recorded... |

my 3.2e p4 gets to about 65c under load. idle is around 55c. I've had it go as high as 75c back in my OCing days.

i currently have 2 rigs
P4E 2.8Ghz 256MB DDR400 Elsa Gladiac MX400 Creative Live! 5.1 soundcard 80GB HDD and AMD 64 Sempron 3000+ (754 socket) 1GB DDR400 Albatron GeForce Fx5900XT 128MB Creative Live! 5.1 80GB HDD i'm planning on getting a new comp, but before that i have to get rid of 1 first, which parts do you suggest i keep and which to sell? |

I'd definitely let that AMD system go. I have a similar one in a 3rd system that I rarely turn on anymore. The 754 architecture is really old now.
What PIN layout is that P4? 478 or ?? As for selling them: You'd likely not get much for any of it. Even the 5900XT is pretty dated now. What is it you're looking to get? |

the P4E is a 478 pin system, both of the rigs are 2 years and older, so i was thinking which parts i should keep and which i should let go...
comparing the P4E and the Sempron, which is better a processor? |

will the p4E bottleneck the x1950 256MB alot?

i'm not sure about alot, but i'm sure it will. i'm thinking that i'm going to have to OC my rig a little bit to remove some of that bottleneck. but i'm not sure about OCing my rig because my RAM sucks at OCing

i'm not gonna touch my rams, they are old DDR400 Kingston Value Rams, if i ever turn them up 1 notch, i'm afraid they might burn up right in front of me...

Kingston Value RAM doesn't very good OCing potential.
i've tried it

maybe i should just overclock the northbridge...
EDIT: what PSU do you suggest i get? i'm using an iCute 450W PSU, non-truepower. if i were to reassemble my rig with the Albatron 875P mobo, P4E 2.8Ghz, 2x 512 DDR400, Seagate SATA 7200rpm 80GB, Creative Live! 5.1 SE, X1950Pro 256MB, 1 DVD+/-RW, 1 CD-RW and 4 LED 80mm fans, whats the value for money PSU i should get? the northbridge controlls the CPU clocks and memory speeds
you should get a name-brand PSU. something like Enermax, Antec, OCZ, PC Power & Cooling, and Ultra just to name a few. just be aware that a good PSU won't be cheap. |

with the number of things i have in there, i would need one PSU which can supply power at a steady rate...
i think i'll go with HEC... http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/r...r_480UB_1.html Last edited by RaveneR; Apr 17, 2007 at 01:27 AM. |

seems alright. but the only thing that would be of concern would be the gfx card. use the link below for a PSU indicator for how much your components will be drawing out of a PSU.

It came out with 435W on the Lite version, is the Amps on the HEC PSU enough for a x1950?

i think my post here should better help you out regarding the amperage on an x1950. i took a pic of the requirements. i don't think that there is any difference between a 256Mb and a 512Mb version in terms of power consumption

hmmm i'm not quite sure wahts wrong with my 2.8e, the temps are running pretty high even after i've changed the thermal compound...
Current System Temp 42C/107F Current CPU Temp 68C/154F i need some quick answers... |

re-seat your HSF assembly again. decrease the voltage to your CPU (if you increased it). the scotties are supposed to run ~55c idle and ~65c load. but if 68c is your idle temps, then....yea

well i've basically done what ever i could think of to bring the temp down... including of what you have suggested, all my clocks are at its default, and cant go any lower...
i heard it from somewhere long ago, is it true a newly applied thermal compound layer needs time and heat to "stablise" itself to achieve its optimal performance? |

the only real thing aside from increased voltage that would be able to drive up the CPU's temp is an improperly mounted HSF assembly. try pressing down on your HSF assembly while looking at your CPU's temps to see if they drop any. if it does, then that's the problem. if not, then i dunno.
and yes, it does take a few days, usually 24-48hrs., of computer usage for the thermal paste to cure/set. that's especially true for as5. |

But, offhand, after reading through the posts and replies, I'd be suspicious of the cooling fan right now. Is it even blowing the air in the right direction? That is, toward the CPU and not away from? |

maybe i try letting the thermal compound settle first... |

I've never had to wait for thermal compound to actually work right. You do realize you can put too much on as easily as you can put on too little, right? It doesn't take but about as much as the size of a small pea to do the job.
