hard drive stopped working (need to recover data!!)
hey guys....
so today i turned on my computer as usual, planning on transferring some data from 1 hd to another.. until i tried to access this hard drive (segate 120gig sata drive).... i double clicked the drive, which is named differently than before (its name used to be 120gig but now its just the regular drive name) and after like a minute a little error thing pops up and says "drive g is not formatted, format now?" what the hell? i havent done anything different than ive ever done before and all of a sudden this drive stops working on me i have so much files and music and pictures in it that i need badly... can any one reccomend a good data recovery program or something because i need the files that are on the drive... thanks

A few things to try first: * Make sure all the connections are good and secure. * Change the cable and power cord if the above doesn't work. * Change to another connector on the mobo if possible. If none of the above work, use the CHKDSK option to fully scan and repair the drive. Do NOT let Windows try to Format this drive! But, DO check both options for CHKDSK to do a full scan and recovery. It could take HOURS so plan to do this overnight. If this still doesn't work, post back. We'll try some other things. Good luck! |

What you need to do is go to that CHKDSK option, check BOTH options, click OK and reboot the system. If it's working it will likely take several hours to get it fixed. Good luck! BTW, if you have another computer available, see if the DSKCHK will work in that one. AND, has there been any kind of severe weather and/or power outtages in your area recently? |

Hmm sure sounds like the drive problem I had back in 2003. You better be sparing on how much you power that drive before it totally dies.

You could also have used dd and gotten an exact copy of the entire drive back, with irrecoverable/unreadable sectors substituted with 0's
