Finally in the market for a Digital Camera

I still dont think i need it at all though, but i'll most likely be using it for a very short time and then reselling it, demoing it or whathave you.

I'm looking for something that isn't one of those POS small little buggers of a camera that you can't hold onto. And nothing outragiously huge either.

Probably 300-400 $ CAD ballpark though.

Digital zoom is a no no, i don't want it, so optical is what i'm looking for. And i don't need movie making capabiltiies.

Something that'll spit out RAW image files would slick, but i'm sure that's getting way up into the proffesional high end stuff.

If anything 100% quality jpegs?

Probably Cannon, enless someone can recommend something else. And lastly, something in which i don't have to install software onto the computer to be able to pull the pictures off it (follows the XP and Vista standards)

Throw me some links Thanks in advanced

How about Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd:

The only problem could be that is probably uses PTP...

good luck finding 100% quality jpegs - i don't think such a thing exists, usually you're given the option to save as .tif, or raw on higher end cameras

i think the only way to get raw would be a DSLR style camera - maybe the Canon EOS400D (or even the 350D if there's any stock - i have one, great camera)

PangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nice

for $300-400 CAD digital cameras other than Canon...

i have not checked out reviews yet, and these cameras may have bad reviews?

if you like zoom check out Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 - http://panasonic.co.jp/pavc/global/lumix/fz8/index.html , 12x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens (equivalent to 36mm to 432mm in a 35mm film camera)

for (a possible) better picture quality but less zoom check out Nikon Coolpix P5000 (Performance 5000) - http://www.nikondigital.com/main.html?page=p5000

PangingJR, i've actually got that EXACT camera sitting behind me on a shelf, it's my Business Partners camera though, so i can't exactly use it, but i was looking for more options (the panasonic one)

But thanks for the suggestions, i'll look at that coolpix.

I'm no pro but I can give some brand advice. I generally like to stick with Sony when I buy electronics so for my first digital camera I bought a Sony model and I had nothing but headaches with it, it would automatically shut off when I went into macro mode and zoomed in, it ate batteries like there was no tomorow so I exchanged it for another one thinking the unit was defective and had the exact same problems with the replacement unit . Anyway I got rid of the Sony and went with an entry level Canon and the difference is night day, absolutely no frustrations with the Canon. It has some pretty advanced features yet is noob freindly and intuitive and its easy on batteries.

So yeah I don't think you can go wrong with Canon when it comes to camera's.

Judas, I thought RAW format was above your price range, but...

Back in February, we got a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 after much research then 'finger crossing' after purchase. It has worked mahvelously (color and clarity are very good).

Well, don't see that camera available now, but the DMC-FZ8 has been introduced as its replacement, and does RAW format, with 12X optical zoom through the outstanding Leica (Swiss) lens. 4X digital zoom on top of that - thank 'gaud' for the image stabilizer which they have been doing well with for years now for those superzoom photo opportunities. I'm definitely with PangingJr on that pick.

I'd take a chance on it...

Link to info Here at Newegg, with a link to the manufacturer's own product info page there too. Don't know about securing one in Canada though - but it should barely fit your budget.

Edit - I was sure I saw it the other evening, but I couldn't find it today (5-1, second guessing myself on this - good thing...) - the FZ-8 does not do RAW format evidently - sorry...

You HAVE to look here before buying a camera.. Amazing review site. Make sure to check out the sample photos. I just bought one last week for the first time after studying that site among others. You will definitely find what you are looking for there, or at least rule out a bunch of stuff and help narrow your decision.
