exclamation Nero Help

Alright, I'm having this problem with Nero.

I had an older version and for some reason I thought they blacklisted my cd-key (it's not a completly legal copy ) So I uninstalled it, and deleated the folder, and ran regcleaner to get rid of all the Ahead/Nero reg entries. Then I rebooted naturally.

So I went to www.ahead.de and got the latest version. When I try to install it, it gives me this error:

An error has occurred during the copy process (file name: MSVCRT.dll).
Error: 2
Please Reboot your computer and retry

Oh course rebooting does nothing.

So I ran a search and searched on my own and found the MSVCRT.dll file in my system and system32 folders. So I know it's there.

Another problem.

I went to install my old version and it gives me a similar error, but with a different file name.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to resolve this?

Boot into safe mode, back-up the MSVCRT.dll file to a known location. Delete the file from the dir where it is and restart normally, then try and install Nero

gonna have to get some DOS people in here that can tell you how to navigate to that file you moved and move it back to original location in DOS. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to do much of anyhting in DOS

to backup your files is pretty easy. Just pull out the hard drive and set it to slave (via jumpers) and hook it up to running pc as slave. Then pull what you want off it. Though you might could replace that file you moved from earlier and get back to a working albeit non Nero having PC...

No need to format. All you need to do is to restore that 'msvcrt.dll' file ("MS Visual C Run Time" - lots of stuff is dependant from that file, and without it, it won't even boot properly in safe mode - but you know that now )
First, you'll need a boot disk to boot into DOS. If you don't have one, mail me (you can use the form mail option in my profile info). Then I can tell you what you need to do to restore that file.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to pull out my old 20gb hd from my closset and thorw it in there. Then I'll replce that file and hopefully it'll be all good.

I might re-format this weekend anyway. It's about time that I do one. It's been about 7-8 months since my last setup.

Thanks, I'll keep you guys updated.

Yeah, I already figured that out.

Ok, I have both HD's in my rig, but only the 20gb is showing up in My Computer. Yet both drives appear in device manager. How can I access my 80gb HD (the one that's messed up)?

BTW - The 20gb is running WinME, and the 80 is running WinXP. If that makes a difference.

What are you talking about?

I can't even boot up my WinXP drive. It's jacked up because I moved that file.

Anyone know how I can get my 80gb to appear in my computer so I can access it and fix this damn thing?

You don't have to boot into Windows. If you are using XP - start your PC, tap F8 until you see a screen with options, then select restore most recent settings that worked.

It doesn't work. I always get a fatal error screen whenever I try to boot from the WinXP Drive. I can't get to any menu's. I have WinXP's System restore disabled anyway. I have to replace that file. I've hooked up my other drive, and I am booted up on it now. I have to access my other drive to fix it. It isn't showing up in My Computer, but it is detected in device manager.

Now does anyone know how I can get my WinXP drive to appear in My Computer???

Am I correct in assuming the WinXP drive is formatted in NTFS file system.....

If so you will need a tool to allow you to read NTFS from a dos prompt....

Then you will have to navigate to the directories that have the file in question and rename the files from dos.

Would installing XP on the 20gb drive work?

he may need to anyway as it sounds like windows was on the blink before any of this started.... note botched NERO install. Usually things just get worse from there anyhow and a nice clean format is in order. Though it'd sure be nice if he could back up that data he wanted to first...

Definately, I know he could do it. I seem to think he'll just lose it all and reinstall.

Yes, of course. You just need 1.2 GB of free space, at the very least (better 2GB, cause you still need ample space for the swap file).
Using that, you should be easily able to restore the file, just move it back from C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\My Documents to its original location using Explorer.
Perhaps this would also be a good moment for a slipstream install of XP w/ SP1 in it and then transfer your stuff to the newly installed XP. Once you got your original XP fixed, you could use the Transfer Wizard located under Programs->Accessoires->System programs->Transfer files and settings. Just run it once on the original install, and it will create one big file with all the settings 'n' stuff. Then run it on the new install and point it to that file just created, and it will import the stuff.

Alright guys thanks for all the advice.

I'm at school right now so I can't do much of anything.

When I get home I will try the dos route.

As of now I just want to back up some data that I have to have on my XP drive. Then I re-format this weekend. I haven't done an overhall for about 8 months, it's about time I do one.

I'll still keep you guys updated, thanks again, naumo
