System Specs

3mb read speeds

ya.... slight problem there with 3mb read speeds on my primary WD 160gig HD.

ill be quite honest here, i know alot about computers but i know next to nothng about HD's and their settings.




i havnt checked the IDE cables yet, but with out replaceing them is there any way to check if there damaged?

Replacing them is a good way to check if they're damaged. Also check in BIOS to make sure DMA is enabled.

Without DMA, you get those speeds. I think on my K7 600MHz I have that exact drive and it pulls 45MB/sec average. So that's just plain wrong.

It may sound weird... but on both those devices you've listed... try updaing the driver on it, but instead of autodetecting just go through the manual select and select the other driver it gives you in that list (not the one you have), then reboot and see if DMA comes back. Worked for me in some weird cases...

back up and running at full speed again. i reinstalled the ide control drivers and its working just fine again. must be the drivers went bad somehow.

Why is one of the devices registering PIO mode only?

I've seen some cases where windows xp has automatically set some devices to pio mode in windows, manually changing it to dma would either result in DMA mode being turned back on, or in some drives instances where DMA made not be fully supported, multiword dma is enabled instead which is a hell of alot better then pio mode.

thats all that was available. i reinstalled the secondary ide drivers and its running in multiword dma now.

That usually fixes it. If it keeps reoccuring I just reformat and reinstall Windows
