Hey,
My system wouldn't "recognize" one of my hard drives. I ran UBCD and ran the Maxtor utility. It says overtemp-253. Windows just says its not formatted. Any ideas on recovering the data (Like buying SpinRite or something)? |

Can you be any more specific about this problem? Things like...
-What were you doing when/before this happened? -Have you made any other changes to your system at all before this happened? -Have you tried other hard drives and gotten the same problem, or have you tried this hard drive in another system and gotten the same issue? |

I wasn't doing anything when this happened. I went to access the files on the drive and windows said the hard drive is unformatted. I haven't done anything to the system, and another hard drive that's in the system works/

Sounds like it died.
It could be the motherboards controller or the drive it self. Try the drive in another system and see if you can access the data. If you do not have another system then find a computer repair shop and I am sure they will test it for you, for a small fee of course. You could also buy an external enclosure or a sata/ide to usb in line converter to test the drive. |

I think the drive is gone... if another drive works in the exact same system then you've isolated the problem.

Hate to repeat myself but... Spinrite is for Samsung drives and won't work if his drive isn't a Samsung drive. Usually its best to use the utility that your manufacturer supplied, but failing that (or if you're not sure/want a second opinion) Hitachi DFT will work on any drive and is usually very good about finding faulty drives. |

You are wrong again H3X4D3C1M4L! Spinrite works on all HardDrives. Here is a e-mail from GRC............... That post is totally FALSE. SpinRite works with ANY hard drive . . . Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, MicroScribe, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Samsung, IBM, etc., etc. SpinRite, will effectively do all of the pattern testing, surface scrubbing, data relocation, DynaStat lost data analysis, mark out bad sectors, etcetera, to make sure your drive is in proper condition to store your data. SpinRite is mostly designed to be preventive maintenance. Also, we do offer a free eMail service <eMailing List System> to which Steve sends periodic updates and news of important events. You can easily add, remove, or edit your "custom profile" to specify which sorts of eMail you wish to receive. Thank you for your cooperation, time and patience. Sincerely, Greg McIntyre Gibson Research Technical Support

1. You're late ![]() 2. The info you got is from GRC. Not Samsung (who made the tool) or the manufacturer of the drive in question. Not to discredit GRC but I would imagine having designed their respective tools the manufacturers would be the people to ask about this. I wouldn't go to a GM dealership and ask why my Dodge truck wasn't running right. 3. Sort of related to number two... in my experience, the tools provided with your drive work better. While I may have been wrong about Samsung's tool working on other drives, the tool provided with the drive would be the best tool to use because the manufacturer knows what special parameters or ECC checks or which test patterns to use etc. on their own drives having designed it. Hard drives are pretty standardized but there are still things that differ from drive to drive. 4. The only reason I reccomended using Hitachi DFT in case of not being able to use or locate the manufacturer tool is because that tool is reccomended by everyone else and is very well known to work with other drives effectively. Not that the SpinRite tools won't, but I just know from my own personal experiences what has worked for me and I will of course reccomend the same things to others in hopes that they will be able to replicate my success. So no, my post was not completely false... there was 1 thing I was wrong about and perhaps I could have just given this explanation to begin with and avoided you needing to email GRC about this (because my post seemed to promt you to do so). In any case... the issue in the thread here I'm assuming has been fully resolved... |
