which hard drive will last longer?
is a maxtor hard drive worth the extra money compared to a western digitals in price? and will a maxtor hard drive last longer than a retail wd drive?
I am just wondering becouse my wd 20gig in my system took a dump and it was a oem hp hard drive(the only weakness of buying a hp computer, the hard drive) I need a new hard drive soon, where a good place to buy them(not online, and in the wash. dc area), I'm tired of the slow 3gig hard drives i have in my pc. i am on a limited buget and 20gig or bigger will work for me, with 72000 rpm perferably and u dma 66 my pc is only a celeron 667mhz

well udma66 h/d's are almost impossible to find now as ata100 and ata133 are the current standards and its sometimes more expensive to get the older smaller slower drives so your best bet is to find a 40 or 60GB HD
and as far as the maxtor/WD debate. I've used both sets of drives and both have treated me very well. |

I have generally had better luck with Maxtors, but I haven't owned a WD in a very long time.

You want to check out the reliability survey over at www.storagereview.com to have an idea of which hard drive could last longer.
I'd say could because mostly it depends on how it was treated during shipping/handling and also the FSB overclocking/temperatures the drive needs to sustain in your system. It's often a matter of luck unless you decide to go for an IBM 75GXP, in that case you know it will fail soon before you have a chance to make a backup

A Western Digital drive worked for 6 years for me and then died. I'd say that's a respectable amount of time. The Maxtor I currently use has worked for two years and still works great. Another Western Digital that I have has been working well for about 5-6 years and still works great.

UDMA66 controllers will handle UDMA100/133 without problems... However you will be limited by the size of the HDD.
I have owned both Maxtor, and Western Digital... I have a 6GB Western Digital that is still kickin (ATA66) and a VERY olf PIO Mode 4 1GB Maxtor that still works.... Right now I am using a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Ultra (8MB Cache) and If the HDD continues to treat me as well as it has... then I will probably stick with maxtor for a while. |

Yes that would be a excellent hard drive for you to get. 8 mb cache and 7200 rpm to name a few of the things that make it a excellent choice!
