disc boot failure on MoBo replace-HELP!?!

hey i had an old MoBo in my old system that went to seed so i replaced it with one i found on e-bay (guaranteed and tested) well- i thought it would just be a matter of swapping and putting everything back in the same place and then it would run. but, when i powered up-all seemed to be fine but it's not rec'ing the hard drive-at all-it says none when the BIOS checks and then says...Disk boot failure, insert system disc and press enter.-So, i haven't yet , i really wanted to save all the info on my drive and of course this happened the day i said "i should make some backups tonite". So i'm wondering if this is common, or if i'm gonna lose everything.
i think the HD is fine, it was working when the mobo went out and it's not like it's been months since its been down-just a couple weeks and i did'nt even remove the HD from the case.
its an old asus CUV mobo running an eide 160G HD on a pentium 3. if it comes down to it i can run the system disc i have but like i said, the point was to keep all the info-i got a bunch of chinese client games that i'll NEVER be able to track down again!!

Sometimes it takes a little 'finaggling' to get a HDD recognized on a different setup. The main things to check are:

1. Proper cable connection and alignment. The colored striped wire (red, black, or sometimes blue) needs to go nearest the Power connection side of the HDD. Make sure, too, that the IDE cable is connected properly and aligned at the motherboard.

2. Make sure the power connection is making proper contact.

3. If the above fail/s, check on the HDD to find out how many cyclinders, heads, etc are on the HDD and then enter this manually in the BIOS settings for that IDE channel. Alternately, do an Automatic Detection to see if it shows up.

Now, one thing you do need to keep in mind, if you've swapped the motherboard for a totally different model and manufacturer, you'll end up having to get Microsoft to re-activate your Windows anyway. (That is, if you're using XP or newer.)

Do you hear the drive spin up at all when you turn on the PC?

If push comes to shove, try picking up another HDD, install Windows on the 'new' one and then connect the 'old' one as a Slave and see if you can retrieve your data that way.

Good luck!

great-i pulled all my fans and listened at startup-don't hear my HDD spinning up-argh!!
hopefully it's my ears but i don't think so. i still haven't tried making it recognize by typeng in the cylinders etc in the BIOS-gonna try that next.
i find it hard to believe that the HDD went down int the week or so i had it stored-but mebbe. i guess my kid coulda knocked over the tower and jacked the drive-IDK.
so -if all is well and i run the sys disk is it gonna wipe everything ?? i would think the answer to that is a resounding yes. guess i'm gonna try to put in a different HDD and see if that'll work and then try to slave this one.
any hints, etc always appreciated!!
oh-how do i auto detect? i don't see that in the BIOS-like i said this is an old CUV4X-E asus board.

i tried to see if the device disk i got with HD would help but when it tried to communicate all i got was a "attempting Int 13 IO to drive 80 No Response" and then it says "ATA level communications: attempting PM ATA Identify_" which keeps blinking the underscore ad nauseum.
