Using a HSF for an unsupported socket?
Just a general question here. Is the only reason you can't use a HSF on an unsupported socket because of the mounting? I've always wondered why heatsink and fans are only for certain sockets
If it is just because of the mounting, couldn't you MacGyver yourself a way to mount a really good one from an unsupported socket?

For the most part, that's correct.
Secondary considerations include matching appropriate heat output with the heatsink, and whether the CPU includes an IHS. Some newer heatsinks put a lot of pressure on the CPU, and aren't recommended for naked chips.

yeah pretty much, a friend of mine has a newer HS on an older celeron D computer that he uses as a download computer for Bittorrent. Its on the processor with six zip ties running up through the stock mounting holes in the board... it looks really funny to say the least

I've put heatsinks built for different sockets on sockets not listed as supported.
Long as you check to make sure that, well what above has already been mentioned. But typically, i check for relatively decent pressure, that it's seated correctly, that it clears surrounding area and doesn't rest on anything else but the socket. I've mounted some pretty elaborate and super large heatsinks, replacing some of the dinky little buggers that most OEMs use. And on my own machines, i've then overclocked the crap outa them with excellent succsess.
