Sudden reboots...

Okay DH, I need you!

I've recently been experiencing a lot of sudden reboots and firstly thought it was my XP side that was quite corrupt (lotsa problems) so I formated and low and behold, the problem persits...

Now I'm thinking it's most probably a PSU problem but I don't really have any program to check (and no voltage meter) so you guys recommend anything as a good proggy? (It was a PSU with the case... So not the best quality).

Or can there be another reason? I really do mean that these are "sudden". No errors no nothing, one second I'm clicking a link, next second the PC reboots with no errors or anything. Help?

It could very well be the PSU if it was included with the case.

What you might try, in the absence of any test equipment, is to take the system down to the bare bones. Just the very essential things needed to operate. Then, test that for awhile.

If that fixes it, start adding back the disconnected devices one at a time until you start getting the reboots again.

Otherwise, it could be Memory: So, run MemTest 86. Usually, though, with memory you'll get some kind of error message...but not necessarily.

Are you doing any overclocking? If so, back off the timings.

Good luck!

Well Dyre pretty much said it all. I have nothing to add to that. I know that there are some porgs out there that test the voltage of the rails on the psu but I'm not sure about them since I use the software that came with my mobo to do all that fun stuff. Good Luck

Okay ran memtest and no errors whatsoever... I tried Speedfan to check my voltages and it shows the 3.3 and 5v (12v it shows I have 0.16vs actually so that can't be right).

For my 5v I have 4.92 or something and 3.3 I have 3.2v (that seems a tad low)... So time to spend some cash on a new PSU I guess?

Yes, something's awry on that 12V reading.

You can download Belarc Advisor to get a complete rundown on your system.

Well I've narrowed it down to a weak PSU on my side and whenever there are fluctuations, it reboots because it's just so weak...

Time to save up for moeny! Thanks guys for all the help!

Don't wait too long to swap it out. AND, be thankful it gave you some warning. The reason I say don't wait is because if it decides to go completely out, it could take some other things with it.

And, you're welcome.

REGENERATION is on a distinguished road

SpeedFan, BIOS or any other software that reads voltages are far from being accurate. Get an digital multi meter and use it to check your rails, very easy task. Try to run Memtest86 and make sure to disable ‘Automatic Reboot upon error’ option. With that option disabled, you should get blue screens instead of reboots. 4.92 is still in the positive range.

Well I'm going to run Prime 95 till it reboots... I mean, if it's a PSU problem, Prime will get it no?

And I'm positive the memory is okay, ran the test for 24 hours and all go, no memory errors... Hmmm might be software clashing too coem to think of it...

Prime95 will stress the CPU. If it's the +12V rail that's weak, try running PC Mark 05 or 3DMark 06 and see what happens.

Okay well Prime95 ran fine, getting 3DMark06 and gonna let that run for a couple of hours too... Hopefully, this will reveal some answers because I'm starting to get a bit annoyed by these reboots

Just a shot in the dark, but does your PSU have Active PFC on it? Could there be a problem with your input power causing the PSU to go haywire? From reading though I would be leaning more toward a weak 12V as Dyre has pointed out, try another PSU?

Yeah it's got an active PFC if I recall well... I might start taking pieces out this weekend, getting just the bare minimums and running the PC like that because I really wanna find the problem.

As for running 3Dmark06, left it on for 6 hours, not a single problem... All I can do now to test this PSU is run 3DMark06 AND Prime95 at the same time

yea i was thinking it was the PSU, the antec ones below 430 i noticed never seem to be worth it..... i mean, my PSU was like 70-80 bucks and it has 38A on the 12v rail, very stable, though the fan is LOUD when i put it all the way up, like a freaken vacuum....

this PSU looks good,

Definately the PSU. Could be a heat thing, takes a while for heat to build up in the PSU and case then it goes under load.

Mainly, if it dies under load, its the PSU I find.

Well I dunno the problem has dissapeared ever since I moved my Pagefile from my second hardrive back to my main one...

Coincidence or the cause? I dunno but I've been reboot happy so far...
