installing new pc, hdd problem
i had windows installed on an old harddisk with an IDE connection i think.
Besides that windows hdd, i got 2 sata disk in a raid with all my other stuff on it. After i put all the crap in a new case, with a new motherboard, new cpu, new memory etc, i couldnt find anything to connect my dvd drive to my mobo. but i saw that my hdd cable had 2 connections, both capable of connecting to my old hdd and the dvd drive. I found a thing on inet that said that would be ok. so after installing everything i fired it up, no problems whatsoever. Although: i got in startup a screen in which the old hdd name was present in teal/lightblue color. beneath it was, press on any key to continue... but it didnt matter if i pressed on the "any key" or not, it would continue anyway. so i wanted to get into windows (which was installed on that old hdd) but i got the message: Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in the selected boot device and press a key. I inserted a windows cd with service pack 2 and drivers i made, but it didnt get recognized either. so i checked back at the BIOS, and discovered that my old WD hdd didnt get recognized at all!! The 2 sata disks were on the list, but my IDE hdd wasnt. Now, this is were i get confused. What did i do wrong? i checked and double-checked everything like four times, but couldnt find any flaws in my installation. I only got 1 hdd cable with my mobo so i that was like wtf, how should i connect my dvd drive and all... but its just weird. if that cable should be able to process a dvd-drive and hdd it should work. but my hdd doesnt even get recognized. Did it break during its trip from the one pc to the other. or is there something i'm missing? The thing that get's me thinking its about that hdd is that the name of the thing shows up while the pc starts, like something is wrong with it. but in the bios this hdd is not present. give me your thoughts plz.

ehhm.. please explain a little more.
the jumpers of the PATA drives? and how do i make sure the hdd is master and dvd is slave? is the black connecter for the master and the grey connector for the slave? if its the other way around it wouldnt work cos its not long enough. I tried to start the pc with only the hdd connected without the dvd and it (didnt) worked just the same as explained above... what i read about this on wikipedia, is that it doesnt really matter... or is it maybe the hdd cable that has a flaw? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If i cant get it sorted quick enough, i'll just buy another sata disk for my windows... that should sort my problems with that windows disk ![]() but i'd like to stick with my old... cos i dont really have the money to buy a new one..

the HDDS usually have the different jumper configurations on the lable, the instructions are all there, then you check the pins on the HDD set it to master, then the Disk drive and set the jumer on that one to slave, simple

I got 3 hdds. 1 with windows and IDE connection, 2 sata's in raid.
it will only detect the 2 sata disks. It wont detect the one with windows on it. the 2 sata in the raid are allready set to master and slave, it detects it like this in windows. The problem is that i cant start the pc, cos it wont detect my hard disk with windows on it.

i highly doubt that the you set the SATA disks to a master slave setup as they cant be set as one....
but if you meant you set the IDE drive to master and disk drive to slave then ok have you tried working without the disk drive to see if it detects properly? as you said the IDE drive is formatted and has windows installed, next, if it still doesnt get detected, if the DVD drive was detected, use that same connector on the HDD and see if it detects if it doesnt.... then i guess your drive died somewhere in the installation process but i highly doubt that

ok.. changing the post.
i just checked what you said. the hdd cable i got, got folded while installing. i think the grey connecter got broken in the process... little picture: ]==========/===[]===[ ]=blue connector []=grey [=black /=folded in length of the cable when i pull out the grey connecter it finds the dvd drive. i put in my windows cd and it started the windows setup. after i put in the grey connector again, the bios found none of them again. but if i put only the black connector (which did connect the dvd drive) on the hdd, it finds the hdd. at the place where it first read: "detect drives done, no any drive found", it reads the name of the hdd, with the size next to it. but in the bios i cant find it, and it doesnt wanna boot. im really confused as i dont know what is wrong...

oh yea, i believe the MP and SP you are seeing is Main Partition and Secondary Partition (not so sure as i have never had to use a RAID array before)
and sharp folds in the cables can break them...... easily so do be careful, if it is, you can feel a sharp bend in some of those wires if there are many broken

if you can, go get a new ide cable and test everything, i dont really know what else to think as wrong as i never had any conflicts with running a SATA drive and IDE drives together in a system
if it doesnt work then we'll have to figure something else out

only other thing i can think of is that that particular IDE HD is deceased. but if it really was, it shouldnt be recognized in the startup would it?
a shame i cant make screenshots the make things a little more clearer. yea, i'll buy a new IDE cable tomorrow.. but as my editing already showed... putting the black connecter in the hd doesnt help either... it gets recognized in startup, but wont show up in bios... ill just ask the pcguy at the store what he thinks while i buy my cable... about the master and slave of the sata... I think i made a 600gb drive of two identical 320gb seagate hdd's. dont know if i worked with master and slave things or raid.. i only know it worked and i got 1 600gb drive in windows...

maybe the motherboard cant see more than three drives? i REALLY doubt that is it especially with a P5K deluxe
are you running RAID0 with the two seagates? i think it would be better to run the OS on it if you have the windows XP disk or atleast get a burned disk if you have the CD key only you will get a nice performance boost from RAID 0 i also think you should just get some cheapo SATA drive to run instead of the IDE channel as i prefer running disk drives exclusively on a single channel and HDDs on another.... it just makes me feel better, but if the drive is detected as a formatted drive (in the directory with an assigned drive letter) in windows then something is up, is it detected as a "removable disk?" or do you mean it is only seen as a unformatted partition?

I dont get into windows.
the IDE drive is recognized at startup, i see the name and all... then i get the message: Reboot and select proper boot device... blabla.. when i check the bios, i cant find this IDE drive. i propably do just that... get a cheap sata. this IDE is already like 5 or more years old.. lol... you guys were right all along... i just didnt get what you were saying. the harddrive wasnt set as master/slave anything. what do i have to set the harddisk? should i set it as master with slave connected, or as slave?

P5K can see 6 SATA HDD
![]() You didnt by any chance turn off the Marvell controller in onboard devices did you? Check that from advanced options and make sure its configured as IDE... I have a habit of turning that off when I go through it at first setup. That would explain beyond having a damaged ribbon why the IDE drive isnt being recognized. If thats not it, throw that HDD out the window, everyone should be full SATA by now

havent done anything with te advanced settings. just put the jumpers were they belong, hdd is master, dvd drive is slave. now all i have to do is connect the bunch and fire it up.
think ill swap that ide out for a sata somewhere in the near future. they're not that expensive anymore... dont think the ribbon is damaged, as its able to detect the dvd drive... i think it has been a matter of jumpers all along. my last motherboard had several cables, 1 for dvd, 1 for hdd.. so i never had to do anything with the jumpers.. now you see... you learn new things everyday

damn..setting master and slave worked everything out.
it gets recognized when i want to install windows, BUT... and a very big but... i get this message: "To install Windows XP on the partition you selected, Setup must write some startup files to the following disk: (my sata disk) However, this disk does not contain a Windows XP-compatible partition. To continue installing Windows XP, return to the partition selection screen and create a Windows XP-compatible partition on the disk above. If there is no free space on the disk, delete an existing partition, and then create a new one. To return to the partition selection screen, press enter." seems like i have to assign a little part from the raid setup so it can store some things windows has to place there... that means ill lose everything on that 600gb space..

ran into another problem.
without the sata disks, i got into windows (finally installed) i thought i'd connect the sata disksto the mobo, and right again the bios couldnt find the windows hdd. I thought i'd check into it and found out i had my sata disks connected as master and not as slave. (4 red connectors, 2 black. the red ones is for master=o/s, the black one is data.) so i put the 2 sata's in the black connectors, and fired up. now it couldnt find any master hdd, and got an error. it couldnt boot again. do i have to set something in bios for this? edit: i had to set something in bios. at Hard drive devices option in bios i could set the startup sequence. My windows drive wasnt set as first. after i set that as the first i rebooted. the error was still: No master IDE h.d.d. selected! press f1 to continue. but it will boot... i think this is about no sata master, only 2 slaves... but my IDE drive is the master...
