x1650 issues

Well, here's the story.

My old original 9800pro bit the dust. I went out and snagged a nice little x1650 brand new. Threw the sucker in my compy and booted up. I grabbed the 7.8 drivers and went to town playing WoW. I noticed huge graphic upgrades and everything under the sun was just better. Then, I started noticing something else. After a bit of gaming, my computer would randomly black screen and give a distorted sound loop that was a mix of whatever was going on and a squeal of death.

I get about 6 of these. All the same. I don't know if that's causing the issue, but that's the only thing I see. I also had this when I downgraded to the Omega drivers and ran the benchmark. It crashed during the quality bench. I restarted and re-ran the bench, and it completed fine. It seems to only be under taxing events when it's been on for awhile.

Sorry, I have to create multiple posts for some ungodly reason, or else the server contact times out. I don't know why that is either.

I would post the stats of my computer, but again, that's too long of a post, and I have nowhere to upload files or a .htm for easier viewing.

-p4 2.66ghz (Non-ht)
-1gig DCDDR
-x1650 (obviously) Omega drivers
-Windows XP sp2
-.net framework 3
-Utobia monitor (yeah yeah, I know. I got it for free) DVI-VGA connector from card.

Dell 250w.

That's the first time I ever looked at that PSU. It had a lot of cables, so I figured it'd be a higher wattage....

I think I've found my issues.

(x1650, 2 cd drives, a floppy, a big HDD, 3 or 4 pci cards...yeah.)

That's GOTTA be getting drained like a mother and it's probably on it's last legs.

Issue is if I can find a PSU to fit in this case....I really don't want to swap the innards of this into my other case that I'm building now...

I'd just about bet the bank that the PSU is your problem. Hopefully, you can resolve this without too much hassle and cost.

All I gotta do really is to snatch up a nice 450w psu from somewhere.

I've already double checked and my dell mobo is a standard ATX connector with an atx12v off to the side, so it's no big deal.

I have a nibbler somewhere and I can make the case conform to the new PSU...just gotta find one that's good. My other case has a hiper 530 in it, but I don't want to use it on this turd of a computer.

Well, I dropped in a nice little 480w supply and it's still happening.

Is there a way to see what slots are being shared? Maybe that's what's causing my issue...I'm not sure.

This is really getting frustrating.

ok i have seen this issue with an overheating card. I have also noticed a few cards lately have had very little thermal paste, so if I were you, I would take the card out. clean the gunk of the core, and put some good high quality paste on it (if you are good with building, use artic silver or similar but be careful not to slap it on as its conductive), reattach the cooler, put the card in, and install an application like everest ultimate and get the core/diode temps of the card. you can also take it a stage further and try some minor UNDERclocking to see if its a problem with the card.

you can indeed see what IRQs are being used in the bios. however you say you are using a dell machine? sometimes they limit the options you can get access to in their bios.

Did you say you are using omega drivers? personally i would deinstall any third party drivers until you resolve this issue, use Driver cleaner and get the latest offical ATI cats to confirm.

its going to take a bit of time, but im sure we will get to the root of the problem. Unless you are using a really shoddy PSU, i doubt its a problem with it, the 2600 doesnt consume a huge ampage on the 12volt rail, as long as its steady and holding the rails well it should be fine (again you can check this in a monitoring app).
