DDR3 7-7-7- anything is pretty low latency
Theres shit with like 9-9-9-21 or something like that.... DDR3 around 1700-1800mhz cas 6 or 7 will be a milestone and will surely dominate DDR2.

well you are lucky that you have to only pay yours that much i will probably have to pay more than 2 times or even 2.5-2.8 or so as much for the same.
still a lot of dough for a good DDR3 right now, and i imagine, in the real world, i would still only get a little compared to DDR2 which is very reasonable price to pay for a good ones as of today. |

you wait for 8GB kit of 2000MHz DDR3, Judas?
DDR3 technology still has a long way to go, but it seems that this new technology moves fast, though. right now i just hope they are not too expensive. Kington has a 2GB kit of 1375MHz CL5 (5-7-5-15) 1.8V for $800 (buy direct from Kingston), and this kit has the lowest CAS latencies so far. |

Actually DDR3 timings and DDR2 timings are not even comparable. DDR3 has an 8-bit prefetch buffer. And timings for DDR3 do little to affect its performance, save for the command rate (1T/2T). There is a 7-7-7 1800MHz+ kit out...and it's pretty good too!

If i end up getting a x38 intel chip motherboard with DDR3.... i'll probably just stick some OCZ value stuff in it and run either 2 or 4gb....... Cause DDR3 is still imo, quite aways from full maturity, and theres no way in hell i'll buy ram for over 400 bucks.

highend DDR2 will pound cheap-midrange DDR3..... Its not worth it, besides that X38 is coming in DDR2 flavors as well.

Judas, you mean some DDR3 1066?
i think of that the same way with you before, but i end up changing my mind and will keep using DDR2 motherboard, or might try DDR2/DDR3 board. then when a better time comes i'm sure i will be using DDR3 only, but just not now, lol. anyways, if you feel you're right, just ignore the critics. |

let me just say it this way....
When i decide to get in another set of cpu/motherboards.... and i have to choose DDR2/3, i'll do all the research i can and try and end up with the biggest bang for the buck. So if DDR2 is still a clear winner for the dollar, i'll stick with it.

Currently, no real gains are seen on DDR3 platforms until you hit about 1600-1700mhz with low latencies, and currently the only things that are doing this are the Micron Z9 IC's and they are mega expensive....give no markup by the companies, the cheapest they could be produced and used in a module still put them somewhere around $500-600 because Micron knows they are sitting on a gold mine.
I only forsee DDR3 becoming as a Highend when they have it around 2000mhz+ which Intel is promising that is what X38/X48 will be capable of, was stated directly as 2.4ghz timings were not stated however. You would need such bandwidth to overcome the latencies and beat DDR2... This best can be seen when comparing the GDDR3 vs GDDR4 GPU memory, depending on who makes it (Samsung BC06 .1ns 1600mhz GDDR4 is the best on the market but is also very pricey) anyways you will note in the HD2900XT 512MB vs 1GB the difference in memory speed is at least 300-400mhz (GDDR3 = 800mhz or so, GDDR4 = 1100mhz actual clocks will vary according to manufacturer specifications) yet they perform similarly... same thing happened with X1900 to X1950 they went from GDDR3 to GDDR4 and had massive increases in speed of the chips, but the latencies brought them in line with their GDDR3 counterparts, unless of course your like me and you overclock them like mad and you really start to see the difference between GDDR3 and GDDR4. But at current there is no real benefit especially when companies are using GDDR4 Samsung BC09 1100mhz .91ns because its cheaper, you might as well stick 1GB of GDDR3 on there. But for another story, the reason the HD2900 seems to not perform like it does, certainly isnt the speed of the memory, it almost has too much memory bandwidth, but not as much on the core, you see the biggest gains on that card when you max out the core. |
