Stupid Question.....about ReInstall of Windows XP?

Heya,

Question. I normaly just format the C: usually, then install Windows XP. But this time I want to keep alot of files on my C: drive, and dont want to format it.

How can I get a fresh install of XP, without formating? And, is there a way, games and proggies...that attach themselves to the registry...will be ok with the reinstall?

The only thing I can think of is to try a Repair. When you put the WinXP CD in it will ask you if you want to Format/install or repair your current install.

You could always install XP to another directory besides the default one..however the problem you'll run into is it will want to stick the programs in the same place. I highly recommend not doing this.

I suppose you could use a program called partitionmagic 6.0 which allows you to create, resize & merge partitions on your hard drove without destroying data. That way you could split a part of your hard drive to do the fresh install, then transfer the files you want over, and then merge it so you have one drive letter again. Just an idea depends on whether your question had a hidden message saying "for free!"

I found a tool that will allow you to change you XP key without having to mess with registry or do a clean install. The tool is called sysprep.exe (Windows System Preparation Tool). This tool will reset your xp in a way that after you use it and reboot windows will ask you for all user data including the new cdkey. Pretty simple. It will ask to fill out thing as your name, administrator password and cdkey. If you have a diferente and valid key just type it in and you're done. If don't have a valid key and you still use the F key you always can use xpkey.exe (XP Key Recoverer and Discoverer) that will generate a valid key. Don't forget that this tools only work for Windows XP Corporate, not Windows XP Pro or Home Edition.
