Help :(
Hey guys, I recently built a new computer, upgrading from this one. Unfortunately, it doesn't work
I followed all the instructions in all the manuals, and everything is installed correctly. However the first time I tried to turn on the computer nothing happened (not even power LED's turning on) and after a few seconds I started to smell burning ! Not surprisingly, I immediately turned it off and unplugged the power. I looked around inside the case again and nothing was visibly damaged, so I waited a while, re-checked every connection etc. and tried again a bit later. Now, what happens when I turn it on is:- power/hdd light turns on (I'm not sure which is which since I haven't used this case before) - fans start (checked with open case to make sure they were all working) - my screen LED indicator thing goes green for 1-2 seconds (indicating that something is happening), then goes orange again (which is what it is when the computer is off) and the screen stays blank. - the computer doesn't beep or make any noise other than fans - to turn it off I have to hold the power button for 4 seconds rather than pressing once. From this it seems to me that the CPU is not working. The problem is, I have no way to test any of these components; this computer that I am using is far too old for any to work, and I don't know anybody that has a working computer that I could use. What do you recommend I should do? System: Motherboard: Asus M2N-MX CPU: AMD Athlon x2 BE-2350 RAM: 1gb (2x512mb transcend DDR2 800 in dual channel) HDD: Western Digital 7200rpm 8mb cache 250gb DVD: Liteon 20x DVD/CD R/RW PSU: Raidmax 500W (with 28a on the 12v rail). Annoyingly, I can't find Raidmax's website, if they have one. GFX: integrated, for now anyway. Last edited by aNy_oNE; Sep 26, 2007 at 09:31 AM. |

Is there anyway to determine exactly where the 'burning' smell came from? If you can't readily detect any particular area, try this:
Get a long straw and fix it with something like a small funnel at one end. Place the small end at various locations around the motherboard....unplugged, of course....and take a whiff through the 'funnel'. If you can pinpoint where the burning happened, it'll help narrow down your options. If this isn't feasible, I'd recommend removing the motherboard from the case, and doing the smell test up close on both top and bottom. Did you use the proper thermal compound/paste for the CPU? Is the CPU actually securely fastened in place? Do you see any capacitors that look unusual? Right now, I can only wish you good luck! |

Nothing looks unusual, I used the thermal compound that came with the CPU as it was already applied to the heatsink. It is securely fastened; I could pick up the motherboard with it, lol.
I'll have to try the smell test thing, and I guess I can't see the back of the motherboard so there might be something burned there. By the way, the PSU has a connector on it that doesn't go with any of the devices or the motherboard. It is smaller than an ATX plug and has 4 square holes. Can you tell me what this is for ? Also, do the power cables from the PSU have to be plugged in in any particular order? (like, there are 3 connectors or so on each cable from the PSU; does one particular one of these have to be plugged in or can you just plug things in wherever?) The PSU didn't come with a manual and none of the other manuals mentions it. Thanks for all your help ![]() EDIT: Okay, I found the source of the burning; some of the circuitry on the motherboard was burnt and twisted. Looks like I'll have to return it.. >_< Luckily, the CPU and everything else looks fine though. Also, I had to remove the heat sink from the CPU in order to take the CPU off the motherboard. Should I get more thermal compund when I install it in a new motherboard? Once again, thanks

Yes you should and get some AS5 or the Arctic Cooling MX thermal paste. Make sure you follow the directions provided for best results.

as for the order in which you plug things in there isn't one....just find the cable that is the easiest reach and voila. however, NEVER plug anything in while the PSU is plugged in....at least that is what i always live by ![]() good luck sir does it look like this?

Yes, just be careful with it, because it's conductive. If you get sloppy with it, it could do more harm than good.

Update: Computer is fully built and working
Only one thing - unidentified device after installing all drivers and such, "instance ID" is "ACPI\ATK0110\1010110". Anyone know what this is?

It states on the Arctic Silver website that it is "slightly capacative". And anyway it all works fine now lol
Oh and thanks jp306, forgot to use Google lol that site helped me get rid of it. Last edited by aNy_oNE; Oct 17, 2007 at 09:19 AM. |
