soooo i suck when it comes to computers so bear with me here...sooo my computer was running slower than usual so my friend recommended that i reformat my computer so i did. So when i got everything installed again and i tried starting up Guildwars but i got some graphics error or something. So i went to check what was the problem and i found that my Graphics card thingy was set to VgaSave. I had some help building this computer so i have no idea what the name of the driver is. All i know is that its an Emachines computer. I tried to download the driver thing from the site but i didnt work. Sooo im run out of idea on what to do next. Some help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

First of all, when you do a complete format and new installation of Windows, you'll ALSO need to install and update the Motherboard Drivers. You should have a CD that came with the Motherboard and the drivers will be included on that. You should definitely check the Motherboard manufacturer's website for updated drivers and even a BIOS update for it as well. Now, these Motherboard drivers will NOT automatically install the drivers for your graphics card. You need to know which card you have in the PC. Before we go much further, please read the "Having Problems? Need Some Help?" announcement at the top of this page. We'll be needing some more information in order to proceed. Good luck! |

It's not telling us what the card is (if there is a card) - if it's a fairly plain emachines, then it's quite likely using the onboard (monitor plugs inyo a socket on the motherboard backplate, rather than one of the slot plates)
Latest drivers direct from Sis would be: SiS - Welcom to Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation. - SATA/Raid controller SiS - Welcom to Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation. Graphics The ECS site also lists the AGP driver, though this is PCI-E, and the MiniIDE driver, though XP SP2 is often able to do without chipset IDE drivers...

Since it doesn't show a separate video card installed, I'd have to assume that your system is using onboard video. As was mentioned above, the way to tell without opening the case is to note where the monitor plugs in. If it plugs in to the I/O cluster on the back, it's onboard video. If it plugs into one of the add-in slots, then it does have a separate video card installed. I think it doesn't though.
Now, you've got only 512 MB of RAM installed. Since the system is [likely] using onboard video, that means your video adapter is having to use some of the system RAM to function. This is NOT a good configuration for playing the latest/greatest games. Two things to consider: 1. Separate add-in Video Card with at least 256 MB of VRAM on the card 2. Additional 512 MB of System RAM [2 GB total System RAM would be better....much better] if your system supports it. It's still not clear from your response whether you have installed the motherboard drivers. Do you have a Recovery CD or something with that system? Good luck! |

if you are sticking around still, i can get together a list of components to build a new computer, if you are up to it just give me a price range and i will get to work. then if you are set, just buy and build it yourself or have a friend help.
here at driverheaven, we can help people with computer problems but a custom built system is just easier to work with and diagnose due to the wealth of information available for each part. also, what is the name of that anime? im always looking for more to add to my collection.

Where does your monitor plug in to the PC? If it's within the metal framework area where the audio plugs into, then you've got onboard video.

Until you get the correct Graphics Adapter drivers installed, you won't be able to run any of the 3D games. Some of these E-Machines use a motherboard that won't even let you install a separate video card. So, you'll need to open the case to see if there's even a slot to accept one. Additionally, if you can swing it, you really do need more RAM. 512 MB using onboard video is really, really stressing things. The newer games work much better with 2 GB of RAM....and a separate video card. Good luck! |

like stated earlier by Kris 23. Building your own custom computer really doesn't take that much know how in the long run and if something fails it is easier to replace and the system may last a bit longer than any of that prebuilt junk. I personally think that you can get a better bang for your buck if you play your cards right with a custom built system.

hey, $950 is a fine sum of cash, ill get right to work! ill build a machine with the emphasis on 3D games, but will you be needing a new monitor and keyboard and such?
also, what is your zip code? newegg's shipping charges and tax depend on this.

E2140 Allendale? A $74.99 CPU on a $104.99 motherboard?
I'd skimp on something else and go fot an E4300 (larger cache), or at least an E2160. The keyboard & mouse, while great gaming pedigrees, are priced on their name.

but still.... as long as you have a good motherboard, you can effectively double the performance of a low end processor such as the allendale cores and have them rival the speed of a higher conroe E6XXX series. in time, im pretty sure this guy will need to upgrade the processor but that would be the only thing he would need to upgrade for a while compared to a system with everything at a "mid level"... i gave him the Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound which is the best currently out so we could help him out in overclocking using stock cooling

so AzNxHaVoX, do you like what you see? the difference between the $950 model and the $1400 is massive!
the motherboards are the same because the MSI has the best features for 119 bucks, it supports crossfire (a system of using multiple graphics cards to boost performance) so if you ever want another 2900PRO in like.... a few months, you can get it! the motherboard has good RAID (a system of using multiple hard drives to boost speed) and it has alot of expansion slots, 2 PCI slots (the white ones), 2 PCI-Express x1 slots (the small ones, successor to PCI slots) and 2 PCI-Express x16 slots (the longest one and the graphics card slots) the 2900PRO graphics card is an underclocked version of ATi's flagship 2900XT, in other words, its fast, very fast. at least 8x faster than the 8500GT and you can add another in the future in the second slot of the motherboard the memory for this board is designed by Crucial, the leading memory company currently and is equipped with their highest grade Micron D9s, some of the best for performance. the harddrive is a seagate 320GB drive and i had a 400GB version, they are cheap, stable, and good performers, while not the best, its the biggest bang for buck. the mouse is the Razer DeathAdder, the current most accurate, ergonomically designed mouse you can buy right here, right now, theres an upcoming Razer Lachesis but thats not for a while. this is why i was wondering about your hand orientation the keyboard is the Razer Tarantula and its sexy nice, just dont scratch it. its responsive, the keys are a little hard at first but they soften up after a bit of breaking in. so nice the case is a massive bang for buck at 60 dollars, capable of holding 6 120mm fans and an 80mm to cool the UNDERSIDE of the motherboard. no other case i know of cools the underside of the board without modding and i know some boards have certain things there that need to be cooled lastly the monitor is a good resolution 1680x1050 widescreen, 1080P HD ready monitor this thing is 20 inches! well i hope you like it so any word about that voucher?

all of them huh? yea thats all you need, i never really knew that you were able to amass so much money in a short time.. i wouldve probably asked if you could order a 3rd party cooler for your system, but its not a mandatory upgrade. you could always get it if you feel you need more power.
Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - Retail and yes, those parts are ALL the things YOU need to get started , once they come in, just look at the instructions for each item and get familiar with each component. do you have any area in the house that you could work on the computer that is either hardwood or concrete? or like a wood desk? basically any place that doesnt have things that build up static. i prefer a hardwood or floor since its a very wide space so i don't lose screws and i have no fear of static build up. if you dont have anything like this, i know laying down paper on like a bed would be just as good, getting a newspaper and spreading it over carpet and stuff like that works good. anyways, good luck and enjoy your nice ass new computer! ill be here if you ever need any help, and everyone else here is ready to help as well!EDIT: i found a guide on the internet that can help you get an idea of what you'll need to do when you get the stuff. Legit Reviews - Building Your Own Computer (DIY) Guide - Starting The Computer Build again, if theres anything you are confused or not sure about, just ask! as the guide is not EXACTLY like your system.
