Forcing Higher Refresh Rate on CRT Monitor
Ok heres my question. I have a NEC Multisync FE2111sb CRT With the supported resolution of 1600x1200 @ 50hz-91hz and a recommended resolution of 1600x1200 @ 85hz. Now how bad/dangerous is it to force the refresh rate to 100hz @ 1600x1200? I have tried it for a few hours gaming and it seems fine but I just dont feel right doing it? Should I never do this?

essentially overclocking a monitor is no different then any other "overclocking"...
while your going over the spec... your decreasing it's life as well.... Likely things will get hotter, wear out quicker.. Just make sure that your fully aware that if things go POOF suddenly, that your ready for it, that you were told that it's a possibility... and that the warranty is essentially ZERO when you try and do this.... as you are indeed running it out of spec.. The KDS monitors and the Samsung monitors i've had that i've bumped the refresh rate up on, have lasted several years without issues..... one KDS 19" i had however blew a horrizontal hold.... wasn't able to fix it though. But that might not have been anything related to the overclocking.... when from 60hz @ 1920x1440 to 72hz on it.... got another to manage a 83hz @ 2048x1536..... where as it was saposed to be only 70hz...

I guess I'd want to know: Is it really, really necessary to go above 85 Hz? If so, just why? I have my own NEC E1100+ set to do 85 Hz and have never felt any need to push it beyond that.

85hz is a must..... i'll say that.
but there are some nice advantages of running higher is it's a big enough of a jump. Considering it's not often windows will give you an option between 85hz and 100hz..... i guess it all depends on the DCC information that's passed around.... a jump from 85-100 is definitely benificial in some cases... if you can push 100fps.... and it's even a bit easier on the eyes yet...

85 htz is all you need, pushing a monitor beyond spec god knows what'll happen question
is can you afford a new monitor should you fry this one?

o.O why would you need to go past 85Hz? I have mine at 75 even though it can do 85Hz (at 1024x768, and it looks blurrier lol >_> crappy monitor ftl)

75hz is a little harsh on the eyes imo....
85hz is fair anything over 85hz has it's bonuses... If you got a monitor capable of it, go from 85hz to 180hz.... it's a MASSIVE difference.... specially in games....

85Hz is most comfortable for most humans but some people prefer higher or lower. I myself like 75Hz best. Personal preference.
To answer the main question... going over spec not only ususally doesn't work but if it does, you're decreasing the life on the tube and electron gun for sure. Other than that... if 85Hz is comfortable on the eyes then leave it there. Going too high can induce headaches during extended viewing of the monitor. |

?
actually i find it the opposite.. going higher reduces eyestrain and headaches further... going under 85hz usually people start to notice.... try this: set a refresh rate... no turn and look roughly a foot to 3 feet off to the side.... your eyes will likely adjust and allow you to see the flicker .... the more you crank it up, the "slower" which actually is faster.. the flicker.... oventually with higher refresh rates, it won't so much as flicker, it'll be flickering so fast that it'll appear as a line scrolling down the screen.... course viewing straight on won't show this.... it's weird how we can perseive things differently at different angles.
