Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme - Awful performance
What gives with this cooler? Did I get a dud...I mean after mounting and remounting this cooler three or four times I get worse temps than the Intel stock cooler. I know Thermalright have been having some quality problems like convex/concave hs bases in the past. But this one doesn't look like it is too bad judging by the "stamp" of AS.

it should work. the fastening system isn't so goo you might be creative and figure how to make more tight.
If I recall Lelisevis got some issues with the smaller model. Or you just can give it to me

I don't think that the pressure is the issue here it requires a fair share of force to get all screws to attach to the backplate as it is...but I might as well try putting a coin or something between the mounting mechanism and the top-side of the base. If it doesnt' work I guess it is time for some lapping...*shudders*

Actually it could very well be a pressure problem, take a look at:

Asmoday its very well a pressure as well as flatness problem. I would suggest lapping it flat, and expose the copper. As well as get some sort of spacer for the scissor mount (worst mounting ever of a heatsink, next to clips that is) and it should fix your problem.

This is my first experience with the Q6600 so I have no idea on what temps I should expect, but to my understanding the B3's run a bit hotter than the G0's..

Its a B3 so yeah quite a bit hotter in most cases. I never break 50-55C loaded even on a hot day. Idles around 32-35C loaded cores usually around 35C.. Roomtemp is about 75F. I also use Push/Pull with high CFM fans, you could try doing that as well, but my old B3 on the ultra120 did about 45-50C. But if your 54-60C is load temperature, that is perfectly fine. Yeah that is my load temp and I am using one single low noise Noctua fan on mine right now. I upped the overclock a tad to 3.2Ghz that made the temp go up a couple of degrees more...I'm a bit annoyed though I had expected a little better performance than this...hehe I guess I'll have to whip out the lapping gear soon..

Update:
I replaced the Noctua fan for a Titan 75-80 cfm fan and cranked the fsb to 365MHz and 1.4 vcore...now it is starting to look a little better I must say; The cores are between 52-59C with the titan fan. It looks like the Extreme really likes airflow.

AnandTech: UPDATE: Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme - Retail
8 degree possible difference..nah think I'll pass paying $65.00 for that. Never mind the mounting/pressure issues put me off. |

8C is huge in the world of overclocking
Might not mean so much to someone who doesnt OC, but its very well worth even $100 to an overclocker for 8-10C off load and better idle temps. |

Like this ![]() EDIT: Note the gaps between the fans and the heatsink, people put tape over that to seal it, as well as a few other places to seal and increase airflow and make sure no pressure is lost. |

. For myself I'd need some type of guarantee it would be that much better. You can take a couple reviews of a production and have a specific idea of how it will work. However, buy the product and be disappointed w/ it's results. I'm very interested in Asmoday's results since our systems are very similar. BTW, my earlier comment about Noctua is I knew he had one. So it was more of a sarcastic/joke than any thing else. Last but not least I've found as I get older I hate doing certain types of upgrades. I loath case upgrades, and MB swaps. I'm more put off by the idea of having to remove my MB than paying the cost. |

well if you need to use a spacer or two when installing the heatsink, i think the installation kit really needs to be redesigned.
then besides an issue with installation on LGA 775 socket's, as it seems to have happened, the heatsink lapping is really necessary? however, even though there is a note about this from the thermalright ( ThermalRight Ultra 120 FAQ )... "The Thermalright heatsink you purchased does have a relatively flat surface therefore we do not recommend risking damage to your heatsink or your CPU DIE by lapping because results may not always be positive." well if the heatsink base do need a lapping job in order to make a big different compared to the Intel stock fan-heatsink, i mean when the system is overclocked at the level of the stock fan-heatsink will be able to handle, then i'd think the heatsink lapping is completely necessary. |

First rule of the Overclocking Club
Lap everything But on a serious note, lapping IHS on chips and HSF bases can yield like a 10C difference, some have see 15C I believe that was the max difference ever seen from lapping, also when you have a perfectly flat interface of about 800-1000grit CoolLabs liquid metal pro is the absolute best TIM you can use. |

Don't mean to threadjack (sorry Asmoday) but I ordered one of these things. Hope you're all happy now, heck ordered some MX-2 for the heck of it as well. Anyone want a free tube of AS5?
