New samsung HDD installation Querry
Ok it's time to ditch my primary hard drive on my pc.
I currently use a Maxtor 160G Hdd for my primary windows vista install.Im currently now at the last 4G space remaining. And this is the reason my Vista Rating is slightly handicapped. My secondary drive which is a western digital 160G Hdd which i use for all system backups, music, photos etc and is only set as a backup drive which saves me time on installations after a reformat. I should be receiving my new HDD tomorrow which i will be using for the primary drive for windows vista. Its a Samsung Spinpoint HD501LJ 500GB 16mb cache. Here is my main question. Does windows xp have any limitations on HDD's and will it recognize a 500g hdd without any problems.I know some will be tied up with the partition. I only have the Windows Vista Premium Upgrade Disk so i need to install windows xp first. This is why im asking. Last edited by MIG-31; Oct 3, 2007 at 05:37 PM. |

It will not have any issues with it. Remember to format the drive to NTFS

I know thats needed
I don't have problems building pc's,it's just when it comes to the technical side of pcs limitations etc i fall short.Seeing as the 160g hdd is the largest drives i have ever used. Im just wanting to make sure about this query before i run into problems. As the drive im using now will be formatted and then posted on ebay. Any way thanks. |

The only limitation on HDD space you would ever have with XP is if it was before SP2 and then it would limit your new HDD to 137GB... which makes it a pain in the ass if you didnt get a SP2 disc, and then it partitions a drive with a 137GB for windows, then you gotta resize yatta yatta.
But as of SP2 there is currently no limitation beyond hardware limitations of the amount of IDE/SATA support your motherboard has, or if you use addon cards to expand the amount of drives (like an areca PCIE raid array) your system can handle. |

Ok Ihave another question..This part perhaps should be asked in the windows forum. But as this is still related to the original question
I have had issues getting windows xp (slipsteamed sp2) to recognize the samsung hdd.Tried 2 separate installs of xp tonight. Each time failed to format the drive as close to 500G as possible. I have had to force my Vista Home Premium as the start up disk without using the current product key..if i try using it all i will get is Windows XP can not be found.Seeing as it's only a Upgrade Disk. When or if i choose to activate vista (seeing as i have not entered a product key).does any one know of any problems that may occur? Or will i end up needing to buy a new license. If so i may just opt to buy a full disk instead. |

You shouldnt have to buy a new license, it should be fine.
Also for XP is it having a hard time, do you have your BIOS configured to run HDD's as SATA instead of IDE? |

I would recommend Nlite to install them, you will most likely need Intel matrix storage if its on an Intel controller which I would imagine it is. EDIT: Yep its prolly on the P5K's ICH9, so you would need the SATA/RAID drivers to install it, I will host them tonight if you need them or someone might be able to help you in the mean time. |

I know xp requires a Raid driver... They are all on the disk that come with the motherboard. It's nothing to do with the drivers on the floppy thats the problem.
My current xp disk is pre-sp2.I have slipstreamed sp2 within windows xp and burned the files to a cd.3 times to be precise. Each time the slipstreamed disk i constanly gained this message. "Please insert a sp2 win-xp disk.If this message continues to show it's either Faulty or an incorrect disk." Not word for word by the way. Last edited by MIG-31; Oct 5, 2007 at 07:56 PM. |

I have no experience in regards to upgrade versions of Vista, but as far as HDD ease of connectivity it usually helps to turn RAID mode off for the SATA interface. With the RAID mode off there should be no need for those RAID drivers during startup. Perhaps that part isn't really the problem here but just in case.
