rolleyes new pc, any modifications?

mornin'

soon to build my next pc, here's my current build, but i'm fairly novice, so i could have some major screw ups in it.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 - 232,
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R - 101,94
Scythe Infinity SCINF-1000 - 37,95
Team Xtreem TXDD2048M800HC4DC-D (2x1GB), PC6400, CAS4 93,20 X2 = 186.50
GigaByte GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB DDR3 - 443,-
Samsung SpinPoint T166, 500GB - 89,90
NEC AD-7173S 18x - 25,35
NEC 3,5" Diskette Drive 1,44MB (Zwart) - 5,50
Antec Nine Hundred - 91,50
Corsair CMPSU-520HXEU - 86.88
M-audio Audiophile 192 - 199.95
scythe "Quiet Drive" HDD Silencer - 39.90

i'm going to use it for gaming, and for audio, editing, mastering, creating, and listening, to be precise.
i have it hooked on a decent amp, so all i want for the audio part, is for it to be really quiet when i record stuff, since i'm putting an M-audio card in it, which is more then perfect, another reason for it to be quiet is because i have it on 24/7, and my roomies don't like the noise of my current pc.
on the other hand, i want it to be powerful enough to pull cur-gen games fairly high, just at a res of 1280 though, but as high as possible.
also, upgradability, i don't want to have a totally new pc next time i want something better.

what have i chosen wrongly? i'm thinking probably either the case or the PSU should be changed, there's probably quieter and more functional one's out there, but i have no idea.

in any case, thanks.

Get a quad if your doing alot of editing Will be supported for new games as well. Q6600 will be your best friend.

Welcome to the forum. While recording in the same room as a PC can be a tricky thing I think you're on the right track with those components. Running the case fans at low speed will do fine and the graphics card fan should only be spinning fast while gaming. Perhaps someone knows if there's a noticeable difference between the 8800GTX and a 8800GTS card on that aspect.

new pc, any modifications?

how badly you need a new computer, can you wait a few more months until the new Intel 45nm Core 2 Duo/Quad processors released?

hmm, but isn't the 6600 a lot lower in performance then the 6850? even if it's quad?
and the current gen games run a bit better on duo, right?

yeah, and programs like speedfan are great for that, and i'm probably gonna see how i can tuck it away somewhere.

in a few months, the improvement will be that big? and the 10.1 gen cards?
how about i just pick some lower for those two, and get upgrades in a few months? or would that be a waste of money? as i've experienced, there's always something "big" going to happen X months from now, i bet that something'll be on the doorstep at that time.

anyways, here's my few thoughts on the system (in question)

the Gigabyte motherboard is likely able to run all E6750 (and E6850) processors at 3.2GHz with all stock volts (not include DDR2 voltage), and with CPU C1E/EIST functions are enabled,
which happens to be a sweet spot for low overclock with the board.

the processor will clock at betwen 2400MHz and 3200MHz...
2400MHz (400x6. and at around 1.01V in Windows) -> 3200Mhz (400x8 and around 1.25V in Windows)

if possible i would get PC2 8500-8800 (DDR2 1066-1100), more memory speed option to play with. and if you want to run the system at the stock clock the board has a memory speed option for DDR2 1066 , and in many cases, when you use DDR2-1066, it does support DDR2 1066 by default.

continue the above...

BIOS...
CPU Clock Ratio: 8x
CPU Host Frequency: 400MHz
System Memory Multiplier: 2.50x, run FSBRAM 4:5,
on the board you will be able to get a more lower memory latency than runing 1:1 or 5:6.

DDR2-1000 CAS4-4-4-x or CAS5-5-5-15...
get memory modules that will run at this speed and timings, and will operate and stable at the lowest possible voltage.

example of the timing settings...
CAS4-4-4-x-3-3-3-25-4 tRD=5, DDR2 voltage at 2.2V-2.25V depending on memory modules use.
CAS5-5-5-15-4-4-4-42-7 tRD=6, DDR2 voltage at 2.0V-2.2V depending on memory modules use.

however, about the system memory settings, this depends on your experience and may require some learning curve.

sorry for multiple posts.

unless you are running your stuff at stock speed, get the Q6600, you can get OCs from 3.4GHz to around 3.8GHz or higher, all core 2s duo or quad generally top out at the same top speed, theres little difference

just get the Q6600 you'll like it better

ok, im not gonna get quad, it would be A above budget, and B make me increase fan speed, here's my current idea, this work?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
Scythe Infinity SCINF-1000 (Socket 478/775/754/939/940/AM2)
Team Xtreem TXDD2048M800HC4DC-D (2x1GB), PC6400, CAS4 up to 4 gigs
GigaByte GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB DDR3
Samsung SpinPoint T166, 500GB
NEC AD-7173S 18x
NEC 3,5" Diskette Drive 1,44MB (Zwart)
Antec Performance One P182 (ATX, Geen PSU, Zwart)
Corsair CMPSU-520HXEU
Audiophile 192
Yate Loon D12SL-12 (X 3, to replace each case fan)
Zalman ZM-MFC1 Plus
Arctic Silver 5 (12gr better too much then too little, always nice for later)

how would you improve this?

here's Everest's Cache and Memory benchmark results...

E6750 (CPU Vid 1.27V), running at stock clock and default volts... 333x8 2667MHz <-> 333x6 2000MHz

DDR2-800 @ CAS4 with low latencies/timings vs. DDR2-1066 @ CAS5 (losse timings)

----------

the CPU overclocked to 400x8 3200MHz <-> 400x6 2400MHz, running with default volts.

1:1 DDR2-800 @ CAS5 vs. CAS4 vs. CAS4 with low latencies/timings

4:5 DDR2-1000 @ CAS5 vs. CAS5 with low latencies/timings vs. CAS4.

for a relative noob like me, what's that mean?

i've never done overclocking, and i'm not that experienced with this stuff et all, i just like to tinker with pc's, and know how to work one, but the specs im not quite clear of.

ah okay, just ignore the post then. just as seeing you considering the E6750 processor and i have made out that results for my own reference when i first got the CPU myself months ago.
