Frame Rate Issues
I'm not sure if there is a way to fix a problem I'm having but I thought I would ask. I have an old system, XP 2500+ 1GB dual channel PC 3200 RAM, Nvidia 6800GT video. Everything worked great with XP but I decided to upgrade to Vista home basic. As a result, the only way I can get reasonable frame rates in games, rFactor, Madden, Doom 3, is to slow the system down to 133 mhz memory frequency in the bios settings, which makes the machine an XP 1900+. At that speed, I am able to get slow but consistant FPS of around 30. However, if I run the memory freq. at 166 mhz, making the machine an XP 2500+, my frame rates start to jump around anywhere from 80 down to 3 FPS. It's impossible to use the system for any games when the FPS continues to jump around. This happens even when I'm on a single screen with no movement or activity. I purchased Team Fortress 2 this week but cannot use it at the slower speed because of poor FPS online. To make a long story even longer, I realize that I need to upgrade the system but would really like to understand why this is happening. I have shut down everything in Vista and adjusted the games to their lowest settings with no luck. Again, I never had this type of issue with XP. Any ideas or should I just throw the box down the stair case? Thanks for your help.

whats the problem of sticking to xp? for this system this seems much wiser to me and if it also solves your fps problem... why vista? ur specs seem low for vistagaming anyways... to me.
or else try to experiment with ram settings in bios. singlechannel or maybe async oder anything there is. i had a similar problem with my vista install too. lowering the fsb for memory helped. |

Thanks for the reply. I had problem with XP that I couldn't fix. As a result, I decided to upgrade to Vista rather than go with a fresh XP install. I may have made a mistake, considering my system specs.
