Hmmm,
Wasn't able to get back 'til now, but from what I've read in the sales lit for the 245BW, it doesn't have any of the extra analog video type inputs you were looking for, but this one Gateway Computers: Store - Gateway - FPD2485W 24" Widescreen High-Definition LCD Flat-Panel Display does - and it does Picture in Picture. It's price comparable (499.00) here is the US, and it specifies a wider viewing angle. By that wiki in BlueMak's post it is a PVA - a steal for the price. Can you get the Gateways at a decent price in Canada? I believe the value of the dollar US/Can is now about 1 to 1, which makes US stuff a good value unless there are taxes... I think the Samsung is going to be a good monitor, they're very conscious of their reputation, but the Gateway unit looks to meet your needs/wants better. BTW, I also use the viewing angle to try to help discern what type panel the manufacturer uses. The 160/170 look to be the standard TN types, the wider ones (176-178) either IPS or PVA - but that's still just a guess really. The manufacturers really ought to say themselves...

gateway isn't an option.... i can't even seem to order from gateway directly anymore....
If there is any 8bit tn models cirulating.... i'd put my bets on samsung to be one of the first to spit one out...

lol.. i don't want a TN panel if i had the choice..
but i don't... there is currently no other model of 24" available here that is of good quality that is still cheap enough to get. Even the samsung was at a significantly high price.

well, the Samsung 245B (i was told it was a BW, but it's B from what i can tell) is actually quite an amazingly good looking and performing monitor...
Just to compare it to the dell 3007WFP i've got... The colors ARN'T quite as vibrant (but they are damn good imo) The responce time is very obvious however Aside from that, there is zero color banding of any kind in all the tests i did that would be considered bad in any form... it's definitely 8bit.... full color... very VERY clean color. Sharp as hell Played a HD-DVD back on it and in fast action didn't see any tearing of any kind... smooth as silk.. no ghosting... no dead pixels.. My sister is pretty damn pleased with it, and she's now just getting the grasp on vista x64 for the first time (upgraded her to a dual core (x2 4400+) with 2gb of ram and a HD2600xt along with a seagate barracuda 7200.10 320gb, which is pretty big jump from a single core 3000+ with 1gb of value ram, windows xp 32bit, x700pro, 80gb ide maxtor drive.)

Glad to hear you, and especially your sister, like the big new Samsung. You've gotten her a very nice system overall!

I just returned a dell 2407FPW-HC and picked up that samsung 245bw. While the colors are not as good as on the dell I saved myself $250 and the headache from the disaster that dell has released upon the world. The ghosting on the dell is something I never-ever expected on an lcd built in the end 2007. Even my old 2405fpw was better than that crap. The samsung is amazing for the price though($475), you really cant go wrong with it.

Your sister is very lucky to have a bro like you. The monitor kicks butt so I'm sure she is very happy with it and will be for quite some time.
I was so pissed with the Dell that I was actually going to spend even more on the NEC 2470WNX but after I read your post the other day I decided to give the samsung a shot and maybe save a bundle. I'm really glad I read that now and if anything I'm very thankful to you also

Nah, I see nothing wrong with TN panels other than their viewing angles. This one can probably be considered "bad" at that but its not a problem for me since I only use it as a PC monitor and I'm always directly right in front of it.

true true but compared to other types of lcd panels the color loss is more noticeable at even lesser angles.

It seems to be that it looks good up to around the 130* point that things start to degrade ... @ 160*C it's still visable but is ovbiously the worse... but anyone sitting on either side of the person sitting directly in front isn't affected.... obviously not for a presentation monitor... but damn good for a home TV/Monitor/combo. Which my sister uses, for a TV/DVD player/internet videos and whatnot.

ok, in terms of P-MVA and S-IPS which is better and/or what is each geared towards (accuracy brightness, response time etc)

S-IPS is the superiour panel in everything other than response times. Oh and it is far more expensive.

I don't have the awful RTC issue "ghosting" that some people are reporting. I can see some issues with the image if I look for it, but I can do that on any monitor (including my CRT), so I'm generally happy with this display. Running image tests, I get slight banding in gradients. Although I don't have any good calibration equipment, if you're interested, I can go find a camera and take comparison pics of the Dell and my 19.8" Trinitron sitting beside it. edit: This review has some good technical information and pictures showing ghosting relative to other LCDs.
