Thoughts on the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 64

i need a heatsink for my X2 4800+, and while the reviews seem to show this off as a very nice HS, user reviews seem less then desirable. loud when its supposedly quiet, about the same as the stock HS or even worse in some cases, even heard reports of the mounting plate snapping off the mobo after several weeks.

It's a good option when you don't need to run the fan at full speed. The mounting clips follow the standard AMD cooler method so I don't see how it could lead to damage, and neither did my own that I used for about a year. I now use a more expensive Scythe Ninja B that has its advantages, but I wish it had the mounting system of the Freezer 64 Pro. If you aren't going to overclock then the Freezer 64 Pro has good value.

Since the cooler doesn't come with a speed regulator of its own it could be a good idea to get something like the Zalman FanMate 2 with it. One such can regulate the voltage seamlessly between 5V and 11V. It's usually quite inexpensive and the truly noiseless speed level for this cooler's fan lies at about 7V. Zalman also has a voltage converter cable made for delivering 7V from a 12V 2-pin connection, but a FanMate shouldn't cost that much more and could be more useful in the long run.

During the hottest period of this summer I had a FanMate 2 set up to power a 120mm fan outside the case, creating a cool breeze under the desk.

slight change in plans, im going with a coolmaster hyper tx2 instead. pretty much the same thing as the freezer pro, only its free after rebate.
