4GB DDR2 1000MHz D9GKX or 2GB DDR3 1800MHz?

ive been having very difficult decisions about whether to buy a system with 4 gigs of D9GKX based DDR2 sticks vs a system with 1800MHz Micron DDR3

im basically settled on CellShock memory as they use the best stuff at pretty much the cheapest prices.

in turn, im torn between buying the P5E Maximus Formula and the P5E3 Deluxe WiFi/AP@n Asus boards.

the thing is that the wireless N capabilities on the P5E3 board shaves about 100 dollars of the price because it saves me from having to buy a D-Link PCI-E wireless card.

but then again, the D-Link card is probably better than the onboard WiFi.

the DDR3 system would also be a few hundred dollars cheaper if i choose to get DDR3 1600MHz vs DDR2 or DDR3 1800MHz

so does anyone know what i should go for? will i get better performance with 2GB DDR3 1600/1800 or will i be better off with 4GB DDR2 D9GKX?

im gonna order my memory from memoryc.com, they good? Search results for: cellshock

thanks dudes!

DDR3 if you got the cash to invest in DDR3 1800..... best kit is the Dominator 1800 stuff. But really depends on the timings vs speed for DDR3, in some cases DDR2 will be better.

yea i saw that Corsair stuff.... but thats expensive stuff man! the only reason im even considering DDR3 is because i found the CellShock 1600Mhz 7-6-6-18 at $386 and 1800Mhz 8-7-6-21 at $473 dollars

far cheaper than any Micron DDR3 kit ive ever seen on newegg or any other US or CAD site really....

ya i do plan to go Vista x64, and i was wondering if 4 gigs was really that much needed.....

and theres another question, with the DDR3 rig, i would be able to run Vista 32bit without taking a memory hit,

with the DDR2 rig, i would need vista 64bit to take full advantage of the memory and i believe theres something like a 10% performance hit on certain apps so i dont really know....

but hey, that doesnt mean i wont be able to get 4 gigs DDR3 after a while!

also, which one offers better performance in apps, games and drivers? i really would want to get Vista x64 but i dont know what to expect really.....

Hmmm... think you answered the question. Price will likely drop by the time you will be looking for it as well. I saw in the Crysis thread that 4GB was being addressed by that game.

I would highly recommend 4GB of the stuff I am using, you can get it for about $800 stuff is ridiculous and has been stable up to DDR2 1250 5-5-5-15 with some pretty decent subtimings, I would say even some of the 6400C3DF kits could match a pair of 8888C4DF's.

My next upgrade when I do it, will be some sort of DDR3 2000mhz if they ever get it there.

And Moderator is good so far

ive never found those corsairs for anything that wasnt extremely expensiive, but i looked at the specs of many types of RAM today and the reason why i chose the CellShock DDR2 is because it uses a D9GKX on an 8 layer board, same as the sick corsair Dominator PC-10000 sticks without the extra cost.

400 bucks a kit sounds a little expensive man, lol the DDR3 is cheaper than that haha

No Way Dominator Heatsinks are probably the best on the market, so those Cellshock might not be able to do Dominators speeds, they are not binned as aggressively.

EDIT: My sticks are $329 Newegg.com - CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

yea... dominator heatsinks are good but they are so expensive in general.... id rather get the Corsair stuff but they would have to drop like 100+ bucks a set to be in my budget....

and there arent any reliable 3rd party cooler that can beat dominators that dont take up 2 slots lol....

anyways, you think the DDR3 system is a good choice? or should i get DDR2? im not looking to spend a huge sum of money (its not mine) on this project unless it would really make a difference, im not into huge benchmark breaking either, but i try to squeeze it in where it permits.....

and yea.... my last question really is whether or not theres a performance drop with 2 gigs of DDR3 vs 4 gigs of DDR3?

lol id like to go benchmark crazy and get one of those shiny avatars...

but id really need the D9KX at VERY LEAST to beat Chaos here (yea i know ur title is up for grabs anyway, but i still wanna try and beat your score!)

the DDR2 would cost around 230 a set and the DDR3 1800 kit would cost $473 (same price as 2 sets of DDR2) and DDR3 1600 is 100 dollars less so....

i guess DDR3 is cheaper! benchmark happiness here i come!

Go for 4GB, if you care about real performance, as opposed to benchmarks. I've got 4GB of DDR1 which gives me better performance than 2GB of DDR3 would.

PangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nice

4GB DDR2 1000MHz D9GKX or 2GB DDR3 1800MHz?

there is any other need for you to stick with DDR2 other than the 2GB 4GB of RAM thing?

since it seems you can afford DDR3 platform and the 1800MHz of DDR3, i have to suggest you go for DDR3 all the way.
