New system up and running

it only took me 2 days of complete hell, but i finally got my new system up and running. (couldn't update the bios with a floppy, burned it to a cd instead and all was fine. also couldn't get the damn onboard Ethernet working for some reason. had to throw in an old pci Ethernet card from my old Pentium 3)

my old system was...
S754 3200+ (clawhammer)
Venus 12
msi k8t neo fis2r
2x512 Kingston HyperX pc4000
x1950xt

my new one is
S939 X2 4800+ (Toledo)
Cooler Master Hyper TX2
Asus A8V Deluxe
2x512 Kingston HyperX PC4000
x1950xt

benchmarks

CSS VST
1600x1200 6x aa 16xaf all maxed

New - 125.6

Oblivion
1600x1200 0AA 16xAF
all maxed, heavily modded
walk through southeast forest (nocturn to drunken dragon)
Old - low 15
Old - avg 25

New - low 23
New - avg 33-35

dawn of war dark crusade 6 player skirmish (recorded game)
1600x1200 0xAA 16xAF
everything ingame maxed, fullres_teamcolour=1
Old - low 10
Old - avg 25

New - low 15
New - avg 30

3D Mark05
Old - 8621
New - 9949

3D Mark06
Old - 4258
New - 5194

couple of things i can see ill be changing. defiantly will be going to 2x1gigs of ram some time in the future. i will also be picking up a better HS and some AS. this cooler master is doing ok for being free, but i cant say im particularly thrilled with it. idles at 35-37 and ive maxed at 52-53, avg seems to be upper 40s.

Lookin' good.

Isn't this your first build? I can't remember offhand.

Nice little rig you built there

You should really thing about getting 2x!GB sticks of ram instead of the 512mb, you would see a significant increase in performance from doing so.

its actually my 2nd or 3rd build. wiring and grounding systems used to terrify me so i had some one else do it. this time i said screw it, ive rewired this case a couple times now (one dieing psu, new one was shot, rewired with the old, and a 3rd time with the new one)

i just have one problem left to deal with, my damn video card is overheating again. (once in crysis and once in 3dmark06) switched a case fans orientation back around and cleaned a couple of intake filters, hopefully thatll take care of it.

i actually need to format this harddrive some time too. its about 2 years since my last format, and it went through a mobo/cpu change. im sure i could get noticeably better performance on a fresh install.

I believe you will definetely see some increase in performance with a new format.
Enjoy your new system.

That's an odd upgrade to make, I built a computer several years ago using that same motherboard and it's AGP. Aren't you concerned that you'll be unable to upgrade the video card further?

As for the ethernet, it's buggy. It cuts out quite a bit I ended up using the usb connection to the modem to avoid it altogether.

na, i built my self into a dead end when i picked up this 1950xt back in april. i figured what the hell, ill just completely max it out the system and get another year or twos use out of it.

actually, if i really wanted to lay blame, its on the 400gig sata drive i picked up about this time last year. after that i found my psu was going out so i bought this 550w one. if i was still running on my old thermaltake 480w, i would never have thought of upgrading to this 1950xt from my x800. and had i not upgraded to that 1950, i would never have thought to switch out mobos and get an x2 4800+

If you can find it, the Asrock 939Dual is AGP and PCI-X as well as supporting SATA I & II (AV8 is Sata only). I paid like $65 for mine brand new so it must be bargain price these days. It also has a socket AM2 board (sold separately) which you can plug in and use all the latest AMD processors with DDR2 ram.

When you think about the cost of 2x1gig of DDR it might be cheaper to buy a new board+AM2 expansion and get some low price DDR2 ram.

And, if you're happy, I'm tickled to death.

Enjoy it as much as you can.
