How to understand AMD's HT?

As we know, HT 1.0 is 2.0GT/S; HT 3.0 is 5.2GT/S

Why not use megabyte or GHz?

Marketing jargon is all.... faster is better but its not like HT2.0 is any kind of bottleneck these days.

In theory, HyperTransport 1 should be enough; if you think about it the FSB is 1000Mhz each way, RAM runs at around 400Mhz each way, PCI-E 100Mhz, leaving still 500Mhz of the FSB each way for anything that needs it. Of course, there is faster RAM and other components to consider, so it could become a bottleneck eventually..
