Seagate 7200.10 not reporting S.M.A.R.T.
Anyone else have this issue?
I have a Seagate 320GB 7200.10 SATA2 hard drive ... HD tach gives me amazing scores and so on the hard drive is acting normally SMART is ON in the bios yet I've tried a couple of tools and none of them show any SMART info ... as if the HDD didn't exist is this a SEAGATE issue, a SATA2 issue or a Vista x64 thing? This is my first SATA drive so... is that it? is SMART/windows reporting an IDE thing? |

...just bummin 'round

that jumper is to switch between SATA and SATAII on the drive itself depending on the type of controller you're using. I actually have no idea what S.M.A.R.T. is or what it does so i'll be keep'n up on this.

its a type of monitoring software from what i read, helps predict failure time and helps prevent data loss

Hi there. The problem why you can't see the S.M.A.R.T status is Vista. For some reason Vista don't support this feature.

SMART is working fine for me (Vista x64)......try using Speedfan to read it, it fully supports 64bit.

Hmm, maybe it is something to do with the seagate drives or MB chipset...I don't use Seagates and I have an Intel P965chipset.

ya tried SpeedFan, active SMART, HD tune and so on with no luck
I might be a Seagate/Nforce570 issue then that sucks... really wanted to keep track of my hdd's life/temp etc... |

Depends on your RAID controller etc.
If you use any form of RAID you usually cannot see SMART data. If not however I'd blame chipset drivers or the AHCI mode on the 570's southbridge. |

go download SEATOOLS from seagate, burn the iso, boot from it, and it should inform you..
depending on the controller in use however you may have to temporaryly disable RAID or ICHA (sata) mode and set it to IDE mode, just remember to turn it back before the system tries to boot from the drives

the ICHA (sata) is a typo, it's a SATA AHCI controller.
btw, AHCI is short for Advanced Host Controller Interface. |

Yes it does. It isn't Vista that is at fault but Nvidia (don't know about the other chipsets). If you have a Nv motherboard once you update the Nv drivers (SATA and/or RAID) from the vista default drivers (8.22), you lose SMART.
