Force sleep?

Is there a program (hopefuly freeware) that I can use by for example double clicking on a shortcut and forcing my monitor (and only that) to "sleep"/standby? And then when I want to wake it up just press a key or move the mouse etc.

I am not talking about the wait X min to go to sleep mode of windows XP. Partly because it doesn't work for some reason, but also because I really would like the above.

Just create a new shortcut with one of the following....I used to use them on my Laptop.

Standby - %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
Hibernate - %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate
Sleep - %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep (IIRC)

2 questions
1)With the "-" or without?
2)Is that for the monitor only or for the whole system? Cause I Am only interested for the monitor. I want the rest of the system to keep working.

1) it is without the "-"
2)I'm not really sure.....usually when i think of sleep i think of standby but maybe sleep just turns off the monitor....just make one of them and try it if its not what you're looking for delete it

I tried the sleep one, caused the whole system to "please wait" message. Then crashed after shutting down the hard drives. Fun!

There must be a way to put just the monitor on standby!

I wanted to suggest the ATI Tray Tools, but I see you have a Nvidia card... How about using the on/off button on the monitor?

Edit: I just found this: Orandy OneClick. I tested it and it works fine.

I used to have an old command line tool set up to do that on a keyboard combo, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it again. I did manage to find another though. Like the one I used before it doesn't seem to quite work with Vista, but since you're running WinXP I suppose it should work just fine. I'll keep looking since I could use one that works with Vista. (edit: now it began to work here too, I'll see if it keeps working)

I found the problem. The mouse charging causes the monitor to not go into sleep mode or if it is, to come out of it.
I don't know why it happens, but it does.
That also with the Orandy OneClick program.

I noticed the same with my Logitech mouse. Perhaps just another bug in the Setpoint software.

i've also noticed that my screen very rarely shuts off when it should, though oddly it occasionally does. I suspect it's the mouse as well. I tested mkk's command line tool and sure enough the monitor pops back on immediately whenever i command it off. guess i'll stick with the power button

If I remember I will try the following.
After having fully charge the mouse, I will let it charge and see if the problem remains.
The mouse does charge quickly anyway (Logitech MX1000) so I guess instead of leaving it charging over night I could just charge it a couple of times each day when I am watching a movie or when I am cooking etc.

Just turn the monitor off.... standby uses 1 watt or so, off uses nothing or very close to it
