XFX GeForce 8800 GTS Extreme Video Card - FREE Lost Planet: Extreme Condition PC Game, 640MB DDR3, PCI Express, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card PVT80GTHE4 in Canada at TigerDirect.ca was it a good choice?, |

I hate being the barer of bad news, so first I'll say it's a good card, however the bad news is that with the release of the 8800GT, it was probably the wrong choice. The 8800GT is faster and runs cooler due to it's smaller GPU and thus higher clock rates, and costs about $70-80 cheaper (the average is more like $40-50 though as most retailers are selling them for $300-310, with Tiger Direct in particular selling them for almost $100 more as in the case of the basic XFX 8800GT @ $380).
If you haven't opened it, return it. If you ordered it online take a look at other places such as NCIX (I highly recommend them). Although, due to how hard it is to come by one of these your only options are to wait for one, or take a risk on the imports (like the Galaxy 8800GT card that has only 1 year warranty, but it's the cheapest card @ $269), or pickup a brand that is not very well known to the general public. For instance, NCIX has the PNY 8800GT in stock for $299. PNY offers a limited 3 year warranty +2 years when you register. These guys are usually known for their high end OpenGL cards, but not their consumer line as they are normally more expensive, and hard to find.

I wish they'd called the 8800GT something else, it's a pain to search for, since searching 8800GT also gets hits from all the 8800GTS and GTX cards. Edit: That's the EVGA superclocked I linked, slight clock bump over the standard, which is going for the same price as my link at most other places.

You should have went with the 8800GT 512MB,.. thats if you can find one since they are all sold out. You could also try ebay if you want to pay a premium on top of the already overpriced cards.

8800GT is going to be very hard to find for the holidays, there is a revised GTS coming out as well sometime in the next month.

no go for a P5K board or P5E board, any of those are better, also, i seriously suggest getting the card now as more than likely, by the return card is charged back, the 8800GT is out of stock.
but that may be difficult, just a suggestion.

I'm very VERY pleased with the results my HD3870's have produced.....
but the 8800GT is also a steller performer....

i stand by my suggestion of the EVGA 8800GT, just look at DH's review of 8800GT vs HD3870 crossfire, the Crossfire is VERY buggy.

Crossfire has it's moments.. sli has had a fair length of time to mature.... imo, since the interduction of the interconnect... i think there is alot of potential to work with... reguardless, i'm not here to compare crossfire vs sli... the orginal question is a single graphics card.. IMO the HD3870...... or 8800gt are probably the most excellent cards to suggest.. While i prefer te hd3870.... over anything nvidia atm...still... Depending on which is cheaper, available, I would suggest getting the HD3870... it's a damn decent card.

Nope. Not worth the extra $82 dollars they want for it. The average price for that card is usually $320 Canadian. TigerDirect are bastiches. I mean, talk about milking this for all it's worth. Every single 8800GT they sell, they do so by adding an extra $40-60 (or more) dollars to the average retail price. Which, btw, this means they are adding easily $100 or more to THEIR cost price. No wonder they are listed as being one of the worst tech retailers. |
