The race to Ultra High definition.....
It's began..
It's taking ages for 1080p content to make it's way into the mainstream, but it's happening.. and already we have higher resolution displays that are able to natively display and also upsample to those larger, sharper resolutions. Initially it was discussed that it would be decades before the next huge leap in Definition standards would arise, but with the acceleration of technology, we could possibly expect the 2180p (4 times the definition of 1080p) within a matter of a few years from now. Considering the 1440p is already available, just not in mass yet, and the orginal displays were initially available nearly 2 years ago. Right now the top benchmark resolution is the UHD or UXHD or it's been dubbed several names already, is the 4320p resolution of 7680x4320, a whopping 33 TIMES more definiton then 720p (1280x720) or 16 TIMES more definition then 1080p (1920x1080) The 4320p has allready been demonstrated a few times over the passed few years, the technology holding it back is the massive amount of bandwidth needed to feed such a resolultion, and the incredible amount of pixels needed to fill such a display. Obviously for a home tv, the expensive of such a unit on release will be only available to the insanely rich, that's if they want to even put money down on it. But the practical application would be huge presentations or movie theater displays, replaceing the old and ageing projector material. Plus we've got the lack of any form of media type that could possibly hold the amount of data that a movie of this scale would need. Were talking TB, enless of course a new compression scheme is thought up that will very VERY efficiently compress the format into something much more useable. Then again media is changing as well, holodiscs are expected to pack quite a bit of information easily. Other forms of media are also on thier way. The future of technology isn't slowing down, it's definitely speeding up. Just in different areas. The next 5 years should be exceptionally interesting.
