To tear or not?
Noticing some excessive tearing from left to right while playing video files, about 50% of the time. Usualy when the camera pans left or right, but not only then. So I was thinking the problem may be with my monitor or graphics card. BUT, whenever I use PowerDVD 6, (the only powerdvd I have) the problem just goes away. When I go back to any other player, there it is again. What's going on? What is so different about PowerDVD 6 that doesn't have this problem?
Problem with VLC, Media Player Classic, etc.

Possibly PowerDVD uses a different method for the video overlay ?
The only two things I know (besides defective hardware or cables) that can cause your problem is a missconfiguration with the Phase on older LCD Screens or a mismatch with the refresh rate. (Problem is: IMHO that would also be visible in PowerDVD)

Yeah, I would think a refresh rate issue...
PowerDVD is likely using it's own internal setting that is most compatible with the display and the material (video, non-interlaced, is 60hz), whereas the other players are using the driver/Windows settings. Check for a difference...

A few more thoughts:
Maybe PowerDVD is using DXVA and the other players don't. Try to set different renderers (overlay/WMR7/9/EVR) maybe some of them will work. There is also a modified "anti-tearing" MPC build: Media Player Classic – Homecinema |
