Any good non-tivo dvrs?

My dad wants a HD DVR to record his shows off HDTV airwaves,(don't have cable or satellite service) but the only dvrs I find are Tivo(service required, arg) or directv(directv required). Are there any High def DVRs that you can manually program like a vcr, etc. without any monthly service requirements.

I looked everywhere, and I think you're outta luck.

Unless someone can pull a rabbit out of a hat

Best bet is to build / take a current computer, then get a HDTV receiver, a huge hard drive, and do you're own homemade DVR.
