Multi-function Ink Jet with Fax Capability

Seeing how my HP has just died I need a new one.

So I was wondering whether you guys know if this Canon Pixma MX700 is any good. Scanning, printing and faxing must be of good quality as I need it for working from home. I also want to be be print reasonable quality photos for my own stuff during my brief moments of leisure.

I know there was a similar thread just a month ago when Dyre wanted a new printer but fax wasn't a consideration and hence this post.

Yeah, I had a similar question recently. You might find some suggestions here:

Spend the extra money $30 or so, and get the Canon Pixma MP830 instead. For that extra bit of money you get 250 page fax memory (versus 100), double the photo printing resolution (9600x1200dpi vs 4800x1200dpi), CD/DVD printing, print duplexing (both do auto scanning duplexing, but only the MP830 does print duplexing), and better quality printing (especially photo printing) thanks to it use of smaller print heads.

Just a minor correction there Tipstaff.

NO Canon printer in North America will do CD/DVD Printing "out of the box".

However, MOST of them are CAPABLE of doing it. Here is a site that tells you how: Damn Printer (ulmb.com) ---- Five Easy Steps to CD Printing with Canon Printers

Basically, you have to:
1. Buy the proper CD tray. You can find them on EBAY, but make sure that they are genuine CANON parts.
2. Pop off a plactic cover. (really easy to do).
3. Enter "Service Mode", and re-program the printer so that it is in EUR mode. If you have used "Codes" on console games this is similar to that.
4. Re-install the Canon Drivers.
5. install the CP Print software.

I have done this with my MP500, and it does an EXCELLENT job

Now there have been some reports that that MP830 setup this way has some problems with sending FAXs. That's something that you would need to do further research on. Re-programming back to US mode would solve that. I guess it would all depend on how often you would use Fax vs. CD/DVD printing, or if CD/DVD Printing is even something that you would even want to do.

As far as I know, the above only applies to North American printers. Seems like the rest of the world gets CD/DVD printing as standard.

I guess that DVD/CD situation must be down to some dumb copyright law. Sucks though. A product should be available and identical the world over. Anyhow, I'm going to get the MP830 as I definitely need the duplexing. CD/DVD printing and improved photo image quality will be a bonus. Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm glad you pointed that out, actually. One of the reasons I mentioned the CD/DVD printing was that it would probably have been a UK version he'd be choosing, but I didn't dawn on me that if someone in NorthAm bought it they'd be cursing my name when they found out their version doesn't do CD/DVD printing.

Oh, and cozumel, just a correction on the specs for the MP830: no print duplexing. I actually had to try doing it on one I have at the store just to be sure. Sucks really, cuz I keep saying it had print duplexing to my clients, and damnit to hell.. it doesn't!

I checked this hours ago and have just double-checked. According to Canon's UK website

Quote:
Overview:
The PIXMA MP830’s 35-page auto duplex Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) allows batch scanning and copying of double-sided documents. Use the ADF for sending faxes too*. This advanced All-in-One has integrated duplex printing and features two practical paper trays as well as DVD/CD label printing.

And on the specification page within the printer section:
Two Sided Printing
Automatically selectable using Photo Paper Plus Double Sided, Super White Paper or plain paper in A4, B5, A5, Letter & 13 x 18cm sizes
So my understanding is that it does have full print duplexing capabilities. I think I will email them first before ordering to double-check. Thanks Tipstaff
