computer randomly shutting down

specs:
intel Q6600 quad-core
ati x1950gt
2gbs OCZ ddr2
gigabyte mobo (can get exact model if needed)

I am getting random shut-downs.
sometimes it is before the computer boots windows, sometimes after it gets into windows and have been on for about a minute, but it never lasts more than a minute.

I have tried using different outlets (even different outlets in different rooms of my house), different power cables, unplugging some of my hardware (dvd drive, using only one stick of ram, tried both sticks alone and still no good), setting bios back to default settings, basically tried everything except a different power supply, which I do not have on hand.

computer totally shuts off, not just one component, all case lights go out and everything turns off, it just basically loses power.

any more suggestions before I order a new psu?
if you need more detailed specs lmk.

why did you go for such a weak PSU?

i mean 480w isnt exactly close to powering todays higher rigs properly......

im really not surprised that that thing is giving out on you. getting a replacement is a good idea but that thing is just too weak for my tastes....

running a psu at 80% and higher isnt a good idea....

yeah, oddly enough even though the psu died I have no resent towards this company, the RMA process was very easy, I'm sending it out for RMA tommorow and then just going to keep the one they send me laying around for a future budget build possibly, and buying a 750watt or something for this computer.

i'm confused now. did it die, or is it causing your machine to shut down as you said in your original post?

causing it to shut down, happens when a PSU is at its breaking point, and when the PSU is near its end of operations, or a combination of both......

i know that. but in the OP, he said that his machine was shutting off randomly. this would indicate that the PSU still works, but not with his current machine as it too powerful for his PSU. then in his last post, he said that it was dead. which is confusing me. a dead PSU would indicate that the PSU no longerfunctions at all and the machine would not turn on at all.

PSU is fine. The fact that the system was booting up indicates it was either a device conflict (or driver conflict), a virus, or that your system is overheating.

Although it doesn't look it, your system specs will run fine on a 480w PSU. If you calculate everything out you are drawing close to 400w when under load (350w under idle). When you decide to upgrade your video card to something more powerful though, that's when I would consider upgrading your PSU since most cards above the one you have (even an X1950XT) usually requires a minimum 450w PSU. Until then you should be fine.

yeah, I can't justify spending $100 on a 750w psu when it is currently running fine, but when I upgrade a my videocard, that will be another story and I will be sure to upgrade my psu as well.

thanks tipstaff, and everyone else
I'd be so lost without everyone here at DH
