.avi files on DVD player?

do I need to convert .avi vid files (xvid for example) into mpeg format (VCD/SVCD) in order to burn and watch them on my stand alone DVD player?? or is there some way to just play the xvid .avi file? *had always just played them on pc but thinking about trying to watch a movie or two in the living room*

Some players are able to play DivX directly off the CD now. I'm not sure about XviD though.

SVCD would sure be easier and more compatible for the moment, although at the expense of a loss of quality. But you wouldn't notice it too much on a TV.

I have heard of only one set-top MPEG-4 player so far . . .

For now, you will need to convert to VCD or SVCD to view them on your TV.

If you need any help, let me know

kiss dvd players

kiss dvd dp450, dp500 and dp508 is able to play divx4, divx5 and xvid. It has support for subtitles, ac3 sound and the 500 and 508 series has an ethernetcard built it, so it can get the avi files through LAN. Divx3 support is on the way, thay are launcing firmware updates frequently

oh yeah 508 hasn't been released, but it's gonna have a 80gb hdd, so you can store movies, series, sports aso, a bit like TIVO.
