Lets say I wanted a new computer for 800-900 dollars

As the thread title says.

All just an idea, but I wanna know what would you get if you were building a rig for this much.

Things to keep in mind (cannot be negotiated):
- Keep ~100 dollars to the side for a case (don't have to pick one, just keep it to the side)
- Gaming oriented
- Don't include monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc
- At least 250 gig HDD (I was thinking for 80 to 100 dollars you could get about a 320, but it's up to you)
- Try to keep it future proof
- Doesn't have to be the best for overclocking
- Preferably air cooled (I think that's a no brainer, though)
- Doesn't need an OS

Alright, let's see what you choose.

It doesn't have to be the best by any means, just see what you can come up with.

Forgot to leave that out. Doesn't need an OS, either.

And you can buy a decent PSU for cheap, your just being close minded.

Newegg.com - ENERMAX Whisper II EG565P-VE FMA(24P) ATX12V Ver 2.0 535W Power Supply 115/ 230 V UL, cUL, TUV, CB - Retail

About 840$ + a case. That's the most balanced configuration I could come up with in a short time and it should last for at least a couple of years. To reduce the pricetag, you could go with a 3850 instead of the 8800GT (about 80$ less I believe). And it's by no means 'crap', unless of course if the price tag of a machine somehow boasts your ego.

This isn't for me :P

Even better update: Doesn't need a graphics card.

This is a build for a friend, and he keeps updating me on stuff. So I just needed ideas.

Great stuff guys, I think with these ideas I can get it from here. I just didn't know where to start.

No gfx card huh? I say you still give him a gfx card, but a cheapy one instead then, pretty much for resource consumption reasons. something like an 8400GS or something. Also, this kind of gfx card will alow your friend to hook an HDTV through component later on if they would like. So, here's a modification of my original list:

$239.99 - e8400
$46.99 - G.Skill DDR2 800Mhz
$154.99 - GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3P LGA 775 Intel P35
$37.99 - EVGA 8400gs
$119.99 - PCP&C 610w PSU
$79.99 - Seagate 320GB 16MB cache
______________________
$679.94 + shipping (and tax if applicable)

comparing to my original suggestion, i've changed out the CPU from an e6750 to an e8400, changed the MoBo from an ASUS p5b to a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P, and swapped out the gfx card from an 8800GT to an 8400GS.

in terms of upgradability later down the road, just simply putting in another CPU, upgrading the gfx card, and adding/upgrading the memory should do just fine. and this is still all under your friend's budget

Only ~500$ + a case. The motherboard is rather good and has plenty of overclocking capabilities as well as a convenient onboard GPU with HDMI/DVI output and good onboard sound. 2x2GB will be more than fine for now and he can add another 2x2GB as well as any PCIe GPU later on. This is more than what he'd ever need, but you could also swap the E8400 for a Q6700 if he prefers a Quad.

Originally this build was for a friend of mine who wanted a new computer. When my other friend caught wind that I was building computers, he said he could probably buy a PC off of my for ~1000 dollars, so I think most of these suggestions will work for the second friend so I can make some money. :P

Thanks for all the help

Just rereading this thread, and, lol, you never actually included a motherboard in that list.
