Lets say I wanted a new computer for 800-900 dollars

As the thread title says.

All just an idea, but I wanna know what would you get if you were building a rig for this much.

Things to keep in mind (cannot be negotiated):
- Keep ~100 dollars to the side for a case (don't have to pick one, just keep it to the side)
- Gaming oriented
- Don't include monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc
- At least 250 gig HDD (I was thinking for 80 to 100 dollars you could get about a 320, but it's up to you)
- Try to keep it future proof
- Doesn't have to be the best for overclocking
- Preferably air cooled (I think that's a no brainer, though)
- Doesn't need an OS

Alright, let's see what you choose.

Hows about a Wolfdale E8xxx, P35 mobo, any PC2-6400 2x2GB Branded kit, 8800GT GFX and 500GB Seagate 7200.11 or 7200.10. Would come to about $750-850 depending on the exact models.

About 840$ + a case. That's the most balanced configuration I could come up with in a short time and it should last for at least a couple of years. To reduce the pricetag, you could go with a 3850 instead of the 8800GT (about 80$ less I believe). And it's by no means 'crap', unless of course if the price tag of a machine somehow boasts your ego.

No gfx card huh? I say you still give him a gfx card, but a cheapy one instead then, pretty much for resource consumption reasons. something like an 8400GS or something. Also, this kind of gfx card will alow your friend to hook an HDTV through component later on if they would like. So, here's a modification of my original list:

comparing to my original suggestion, i've changed out the CPU from an e6750 to an e8400, changed the MoBo from an ASUS p5b to a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P, and swapped out the gfx card from an 8800GT to an 8400GS.

in terms of upgradability later down the road, just simply putting in another CPU, upgrading the gfx card, and adding/upgrading the memory should do just fine. and this is still all under your friend's budget

This is more than what he'd ever need, but you could also swap the E8400 for a Q6700 if he prefers a Quad.
