X1900XT or 8800GT?
I currently have an HIS X1900XT card and was thinking about upgrading to an 8800GT (G92)...is the performance difference worth it?...I know the 8800GT is DX10 and will be the faster card but my X1900XT has been an amazing card for me and the performance is great (I can run pretty much any game at 1920 x 1200, with most graphical settings on High)...I'm just worried about messing with a good thing...worth it or no?

eh, depends on the type of games you play. If you play them at 1920x1200 at high settings, then you are not going to play them for much longer with that card. BUT, same thing goes for the 8800GT. If I were you I would wait for at least the next series from Nvidia, and not get the 8800gt either.

If you are happy gaming on it then stick with what you have for now. DX10 is barely usable on any card available today. However, I won't lie to you; the 8800 would provide massive performance gains over what you have now. Its up to you to decide if you need the extra fps and/or want to play with crazy AA&AF settings

thanks for the advice...I was worried because the 8800GT is considered a 'mainstream' card and not 'high end' and was thinking that performance might suffer...I've always went with 'high end' video cards and this would be my first budget or mainstream one
another reason I was thinking about getting the 8800GT is that I can use the 8800GT as a temporary solution until the new 9000 series cards are released from Nvidia and then use the EVGA step up program to upgrade to their latest high end single GPU offering---I was never a fan of Crossfire/SLI or even the new dual GPU cards...I prefer a high end single card, single GPU card |

You'll see about a 50% increase in speed with the 8800 GT compared to the X1900XT.
There's no real point going for the 8800 GTX or Ultra now, the 8800 GT and GTS G92 cards are nearly the same speed.

Back in the day of it's release the X1900XT was referred to as "high end", now you can pick one up off Ebay or perhaps the odd e-tailor for the same price as a midrange card now.
I run a HD3850 and i've not regretted spending a single penny on it from day 1, I would strongly suggest going for the 8800GT now if your'e after more frames in your games, plus you'll be future proofed for DX10 if MS get that sorted. |

8800GT, I push 360FPS in LightsMark2006 at stock, over clocked 400fps, volt modding bios and better cooling 450fps. So in a year when you need more, slap a cooler on it, do the easy volt mod, and crank it up. If your a North American or covered user go with XFX that way your covered against the mods, and when it comes time to go on to new the double life time repair replacement policy makes for an easy sale with no liability stretching back to you.
They have one model (like mine) with an adjustable fan that is larger than the other stock fans, lets you over clock and still remain cooler than the stock coolers. Just in case some one actually listens for a change here's the stock number of the XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog with the larger, adjustable fan. PVT88PYDQ |

Actually, you might want to wait for the 9600GT...
NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT 512MB G94 Tested :: TweakTown 8800GS pricing, HD 3870 performance. Coming out next week BTW. |
