well, as the title says, i'm thinking on getting 512x2 400Mhz RAM for my rig, but i don't really know if it'll make a great difference... i mean, can anyone tell me if i'm gonna get a lot of bottlenecking, no real improvement or no enough PSU power?
the PSU is an Antec Basiq 500W, any other component is listed on my System Specs, and i'm also on XP Pro SP2 thank you in advance |

So, you already have 1GB and plan on making it 2? If yes, then you should gain some speed.
PSU shouldn't be a problem. Your system is old as you know, so the best would be to buy a new one, but it all depends on your budget and what you do with your PC.

yeah, it IS old but i wanna use it as long as i can, and if i get those 2 sticks, all the RAM slots will be full...
and yes, i'll get a new system later when i get enough money in the meanwhile, i wanna get those sticks so... there will be an increase on fps, loading times and stuff and not so much bottleneck? (yes, i use it for gaming, even if it's not a state-of-the-art PC, it gets the job done =D) |

go for 2x1GB, not much of a price difference with 2x512 sticks....

some older m/bs may not be able to handle 1gb sticks, check your motherboard's manual to make sure

let me get this right...
what's better? getting 2x512 with dual-channel or just 1Gb stick? my mobo can handle up to 2Gb, 4 slots (already got 2x512) |

your board can support 4GB of RAM not just two
dual channel is better, get 3GB

there really is no such thing as bottleneck with memory, its just space, its speed is how much and how fast data can be mored through it at once.
a CPU though can be bottlenecked with a slow set of RAM i not too long ago upgraded from a system even lower than yours, i know its capabilities.

understandable, looks like just a RAM, mobo and CPU upgrade is out of the question? just wanderin, 300-400$ in RAM, CPU, Mobo will be quite boost, is the x1650 AGP?
EDIT: Oh IC, then you would need GPU, then PSU....... Last edited by [hobo]eclipse; Mar 13, 2008 at 02:07 AM. Reason: IC |

yeah, it is AGP and i got it last november so, i'm not planning on a major upgrade yet
the only thing i know is that my next mobo will obviously have PCIe 2.0

I would just go with as Kris said a 2x1Gb kit, maybe give it a try with all 3 gig, if it gives you any hassle just put the new 2x1Gb sticks in.
