A Computer Build Im Tossing Around... (help)

Hey guys,

Im trying to put together a machine that will be good for gaming as well as doing things like c++ compiling and such, and this is what I came up with.

I already have a case, power supply and hard drive and DVD drive, so...

•Processor:

Quad
Intel Q9300 Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - OEM
COST-$279.99, Free Ship

Duo:
Intel E8200
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 Wolfdale 2.66GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail
COST-$229.99, Free Ship

*I still havent decided between going Quad or Dual core... I play alot of games, but I like the idea of future software using 4 core's as well as being able to burn a dvd, while RARing while playing a game...
---Any suggestions in the processor area?

•Motherboard:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard - Retail
COST-$89.99, Ship-$6.67

*For the money, this is the best Intel 775 motherboard I could find. Any suggestions?

•RAM

*First a question... Is there a big differance between DDR2 800 and 1066? The reason I ask, is the motherboard supports both and there are some deals for RAM on newegg. The two options that I saw are...

-(DDR2:1066)-
CORSAIR Dominator 2GB
Newegg.com - CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
COST-$50.00, Free Ship **AFTER 50$ Mail in**

-(DDR2:800)-
G.SKILL 2GB
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
COST-34.99, Free Ship **NO MAIL IN, PRICE IS AS IS!**

•VIDEO CARD

DIAMOND Viper 3870PE4512SB Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4
Newegg.com - DIAMOND Viper 3870PE4512SB Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail
COST-$164.99, Ship-$7.26 **(after $15.00 Mail-In Rebate)**
* For the video card, this is the current best one offerd from ATI that isnt a dual core... Would this be a good choice?

---------------------------------------------
Im trying to build cheap and good because im in college, but I want something that is going to allow me to do the things I want to do.

*Is there any reason to wait a while before building my new computer? I've waited about a year already, but I hate getting screwed when they release new hardware like 3 months later that is a total step up from what I just bought.

Thanks for your time and help.

If this is a gaming computer, why not spring for a better graphics card?

What do you consider a better graphics card?

For the Dual core option, would this be a better choice? Im trying to justify it costing so much more to go from the 65nm tech to the 45nm tech. Even if I do tiger direct and get it for 200$ for the E8400, thats still 40$ more than this one and all it really brings to the table is SSE4 which isnt even used yet... or will be used for a long time...

At that price point, it's gonna be danged hard to find a better performing vid card.

I'd go with the Sapphire for the same $$ Myro. It's clocked just a wee bit higher, 800 vs 775, and that would make some difference, but most likely nothing you would see in anything other than a benchmark.

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail

As far as being 'screwed 3 months later'...that's just a fact of life now.

You could get the absolute biggest/fastest every thing that there is available today...and in 3 months there WILL be something faster

Hell, at the rate things have been going...someone will release something faster between the time you order and the time it gets to your house

Maybe go for a Geforce 8800GT 512MB (G92) or Geforce 8800GTS 512 MB (G92).

EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

$204.99 (after rebate: $174.99)

performance wise the Geforce 8800GT is faster than the ATI HD3870 in most games. The price/performance ratio of a Geforce 8800gt is much better.

But the Geforce 9800GTX/GT is coming in a short time, if you really want a videocard, consider to get a EVGA videocard, since they got a 90 days step-up program, so you can switch, for example the EVGA 8800GT for an EVGA 9800GTX/GT within 90 days.

Good luck!

The EVGA step up program only allows you to update to the 9800X2 correct? Atleast thats what I got from the webpage, and its a 600$ video card... hehe
